The Aristo is a nearly perfect luxury sedan. It’s accommodating, reliable, and easy on the eyes. This 1998 S160 is affordable, too, and boasts the same driveline as our US GS300 so parts and service options are plentiful. Finished in a lovely Alpine Silver Metallic (199), this sedan is accessorized with a lovely set of by 18″ Lexus IS wheels wrapped in new all-season rubber. Aside from a passenger fender that was replaced in Japan, and a few light dings, chips, and scuffs, the body is in good nick, and it drives even better than it looks! Fresh off a recent service, this five-seater is offered with an astonishing 23k verified and documented miles on the clock. Luxurious and unique, this Japanese Classic would serve as a wonderful daily driver, cool weekend cruiser, or clean slate for a special VIP build.
The interior has loads of room, decent power equipment, and plenty of safety features. The driver benefits from a power tilt/telescoping adjustable steering column, and one-touch power windows, locks, and electric folding mirrors all work in typical Toyota fashion, making daily use more enjoyable. Both front occupants can enjoy power seats, along with dual and front and side SRS airbags for some added peace of mind. The digital dual-zone climate control is intuitive and simple to operate. Cold A/C and piping hot heat can be easily mixed through the cabin. The OEM audio is fully functional and compliments the sweet six under the hood with some tunes. The upholstery is in above-average shape and lacks any major, rips, stains, or tears. The dashboard is in equally good shape and lacks any cracking or distortion. That’s not to say the cabin is perfect, as we wanted to note the screen located in the center stack doesn’t illuminate as well as it once did. Still, at 25 years old the condition is impressive, and even the owners manuals and Japanese maintenance booklet are included with the purchase of this vehicle.
The front engine and rear drive layout is what you would expect from a proper luxury sedan, and the platform is balanced and premium feeling overall. The 2JZ-GE under the hood is a smooth inline-six and ours is fresh off an oil and filter service. It whirrs to life care of a new 12v battery and runs like a champ. With all of our Aristo’s, we replaced the fuel pump for reliability’s sake, and we also replaced the fuel sock while we were in there. The 2J is linked to a responsive automatic gearbox and gets up to highway merging speeds with urgency while being comfortable on the freeway. Optioned with cruise control, this unit mows down the miles on the interstate. The soft suspension can handle the rigors of daily use and abuse, insulating nicely against potholes. Two new radius arms were installed up front by one of our trained techs. Equipped with power steering, the system is communicative for a luxury car. The ABS brakes are confident and the alloys are knee-deep in tire tread at each corner, and the new 18″ rubber quiets down the road noise noticeably. Ready for an immediate road trip, this sweet saloon is one you can depend on!
