The second-generation Hilux Surf is a true truck to the core. Simple, no frills, reliable, and easy to work on, these 4×4 rigs can traverse nasty terrain and can also be daily driven down the interstate. This 1994 is a lovely example, and is finished in a classic Deep Blue Pearl (8E3). Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scrapes the paint is in good shape and this Toyota is accessorized with an OEM brushguard, factory rainguards, OEM side steps, and some refinished factory alloy wheels. Fresh off a recent service this SUV is offered with a mere 107k verified and documented miles on the clock, so this SSR-X is barely broken in. Tough, reliable, and simple, these Japanese Classics have a cult-like following for a reason!
The cabin is simple, features good ergonomics, and includes a couple of power amenities to enhance daily use. These include power windows, power locks, and power mirrors which all work in typical Toyota fashion. Even the rear glass powers down to supplement airflow from the climate control system. Speaking of which, the Surf doles out cold A/C for the months ahead and the heat operates flawlessly, too. Directly above are two sturdy cupholders and adjacent is a modern Pioneer radio deck with an auxiliary input for your smartphone. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading and is in good nick, aside from a small blemish where an aftermarket navigation screen was mounted. The seats are upholstered in a gray cloth. The material lacks any major rips, stains, or tears although we did want to note some seam separation only about an inch in length on the driver’s seat bottom. The rear bench is in good nick and can tumble forward and fold flat into the floor for a larger cargo loading area. They also 4-way recline. The pilot doesn’t need to feel left out as they have adjustable lumbar support and an adjustable steering column to find the ideal position behind the wheel. The headliner and door cards are in good nick and aside from some light carpet stains the interior was obviously cared for in a prior life overseas.
This body on frame platform harkens back to the days when an SUV was truck-based. This gives the Surf the ability to take a licking and keep on ticking. The engine is identical to our stateside mills, so finding parts and service options are hassle-free. The 3VZ-E is fresh off an oil and filter service and churns to life care of a new 12v battery we installed as soon as it got into the shop. To keep the six-cylinder running tip-top, we replaced the valve cover gaskets and also resealed the oil pan. The 3.0 V6 is linked to a stout automatic that makes good use of its powerband. Peppy about town and comfortable on the highway, the Surf has more than enough ponies to get out of its own way. Fastest in 2WD, the driver can select 4WD with a press of a button. Low-range 4WD can also be engaged during low traction scenarios. The suspension offers tons of ground clearance and can handle the rigors of daily use and abuse. New left and right axle boots were installed prior to its state inspection and the brakes feel confident slowing this thing down. New all terrain tires are mounted and balanced at each corner and fresh alignment ensures long tire life. The steering is light and power-assisted and this SSR-X tracks straight as an arrow, so you can start exploring from day one!
