Americans cherish the 100 series Land Cruiser for a lot of reasons. It’s comfortable, unstoppable off-road, and well appointed for daily driving and family hauling. Sadly, they’re not great on fuel, and most stateside examples on the used market have been put through the ringer, so to speak. Fortunately this 1998 J101 alleviates all those issues! It’s backed by a trusty turbodiesel drivetrain, is finished in a clean White Pearl Tricoat (051), and has racked up a scant 142k verified and documented miles over the years. Set off by custom side steps, LED tail lamps, an optional rear wing, 16″ alloys, and an OEM spare tire swingarm, the exterior looks the part and shows just a few chips and dings from daily use. A factory spare tire carrier, rear receiver, and LED tail lamps round off the aesthetic out back, and this Cruiser is fresh off a recent service and ready to rock! Deadly on or off the beaten path, this Unicorn Yota is a Japanese Classic for the ages!
Finished in a complementary tan cloth, and set off by fitted leather seat covers and woodgrain accent trim, this cabin is a lovely place to be for all who occupy it. Beneath the cowhides, the fabric shows well with no major rips, stains, or tears, and the dash is free of any unwanted distortion, cracks, or fading. The center stack features a simple-to-use digital climate control system. The A/C blows cold and the heat is piping hot. For improved natural ventilation, a large OEM sunroof tilts and retracts open, and adds a good amount of natural light to the cabin making it feel even more spacious. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column paired with a pretty OEM woodgrain steering wheel. Both front occupants enjoy dual SRS airbags, which are standard equipment. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, as well. Power adjustable lumbar support makes longer trips more comfortable for the driver while power folding mirrors, power locks and power windows make daily use more enjoyable. Even cruise control is on hand, which many Japanese imports lack. There is tons of front and rear headroom and legroom, and for cargo purposes the rear bench can tumble forward to maximize cargo volume. The headliners and door cards are in good nick, aside from the rear passenger door card which has a small blemish. Aside from a nonfunctional headunit and some light carpet stains, this cabin is hard to nitpick. This truck even includes the OEM carpet mats for the next owner to enjoy.
Under the bonnet rests one of the most legendary engines ever produced by Toyota. The 1HD-FTE turbodiesel is low vibration, powerful and efficient. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 4.2L churns to life care of two new 12v batteries installed by one of our trained techs. To ensure the turbodiesel breaths freely a new engine air filter was installed as was a new fuel filter. The old leaky valve cover was replaced by a new unit, so all the lubricant can stay internal to the engine. Linked to a stout automatic gearbox this massive SUV accelerates impressively and feels stable at highway speeds. A Full-Time 4WD system underpins this Cruiser and both a center locker and low range can be engaged if the going gets tough. The ABS brakes feel confident and have been refreshed with new front and rear pads installed by one of our trained techs. This 100 feels super stable on the highway, and it absorbs large and small potholes alike with confidence. We did want to note the rear shocks have some small seeps to keep an eye on. The steering is direct and on-point and the handling has been improved with new front swaybar links and new rear swaybar endlink bushings. The BFGs are wrapped in tread knee-deep, and we have performed an alignment so this rig drives straight as an arrow!
