Mitsubishi’s Lancer Evolution is the king of road going rally cars and for good reason. Our 1996 Evo IV was a smash hit when it emerged onto the market, sporting a modern, twin-scroll turbocharged inline-4, adaptive AWD, and specialty interior and exterior styling nice enough to stand out against most plebeian commuter sedans on the road today. The exterior looks the part too, and is finished in a custom Thundercloud Silver. Large fog lights accentuate the front fascia, and a high-rise OEM wing and factory rainguards make this Mitsu a real head turner. Better yet, this Evo has traversed a mere 95k miles over the years, making it highly collectible for the future! For a Japanese Classic that flings dirt, gravel, or snow, this Mitsubishi is the way to go!
The interior wears bespoke Recaro upholstery that not only suits the performance-oriented aesthetic but functions well in a daily-use situation! The SR3 buckets are upholstered in a durable patterned cloth with Suede accents, and the fabric shows well and manages to have withstood the past couple decades without succumbing to any unwanted defects. Additionally, the headliner, carpets, and matching door card inserts are in good shape and have resisted any serious wear and tear outside of some typical door card delamination. The dash houses a passenger SRS airbag and Pioneer audio is present for a bit of modernization over stock. Adjacent to the audio, digital automatic climate control works like a charm, and spews out cold A/C and hot heat at a moments notice. All four power windows are fully operational, and power locks and mirrors work great too! Factory keyless entry is present and the power folding feature of the mirrors is even operational. A Momo steering wheel provides a significant upgrade over the cumbersome stock unit and feels great in the palm as you trudge this rally rocket down the road. The headliner is affixed snugly to the roof, and the carpets beneath are in above average shape overall. As a whole, this Evolution’s interior is comfortable, stylish, and built to perform. We even retained the original owner’s manual and maintenance booklet to preserve the history of this classic rally monster!
The 4G63 is consistently one of the most exhilarating performance engines we get to work on here at the shop and Mitsubishi really hit the mark with its design. Easy to service and even easier to push over the speed limit, ours is fresh off a recent service and roars to life care of a freshly installed US spec 12v battery. We pulled out all the stops with a fresh timing belt and water pump, and a new thermostat helps properly regulate thermal management. A fresh oil and filter service was performed, and we also replaced the engine air filter fuel filter, and spark plugs for a bit of a preemptive tune up. The 2.4T is a hoot to keep on throttle and a close-ratio AWD gearbox shifts crisply and is incredibly responsive thanks to a brand new clutch and flywheel. We performed a rear differential fluid service, installed new diff bushings, and replaced a wheel bearing in the left rear to keep the drivetrain in compliance, and this powertrain couldn’t feel better. We did want to note an increase in NVH at high speeds from the polyurethane bushing upgrade, which shouldn’t be a concern for most performance enthusiasts. The stock suspension soaks up larger road imperfections with ease and the brakes can lock up all four wheels if needed. To top it all off, we wrapped the factory alloys in fresh Falken rubber. They should perform on nearly any surface in any season and are chock full of grip for the road ahead!
