This hardtop Mazda Bongo friendee is the compact camper you didn’t know existed, and it’s the next great Japanese Classic you didn’t know you wanted! Finished in Silver Stone (3L) this 112k mile Mazda van is a certified head turner and is built on a compact frame to easily maneuver through tight campsites and trails. Save for a few dings and spots of clearcoat fade, this camper is no worse for the wear and is also set off by OEM rainguards, FRP side skirts, and rear spats. Fresh off a recent service, we sadly have to offer this lovely unit wholesale as there is a coolant leak on the back of the engine block, more corrosion than usual on the underbody, and we did want to note some light separation where the fiberglass shell mates to the body. For a weekend tinkerer, aspiring overlander, or quirky Mazda enthusiast, this is a Friendee indeed!
The interior offers ample comfort for drivers and road trip companions, and a slew of amenities and goodies worth bragging about. The front seats are upholstered in a durable grey cloth, and a driver SRS airbag is present in case of any on-road emergencies. Clarion touch screen audio is mounted centrally alongside a screen for the rear camera. Fully adhering to the business in the front party in the back mantra, the high-roof rear enclosure features an elevated sleeping surface, a full service kitchenette with stove and sink, and enough storage space to tuck away your prized belongings. Despite being 28 years young, all amenities out back are still fully functional, including all lights and an overhead fan. The power windows, locks, and electric folding side mirrors do function as advertised, and the climate control is also fully functional, with cold A/C and hot heat on tap for seasonal journeys, and independent controls for the rear climate. Overall the interior is a highlight of this lovely camper. Sure there’s a few stains and nicks on the cloth, but this Bongo is a prime candidate for a 21st century restoration. We’ve even retained the factory owner’s manual for a bit of added history on this van!
The 2.5l WL-T under the bonnet is a tenacious turbodiesel with more than enough grunt to propel you and your friends on a road trip in this Bongo. Ours is fresh off a basic service and two new 12v batteries were dropped in to aid ignition. An oil and filter change was also performed, and we replaced all the serpentine belts to drive your accessories reliably. Acceleration is decent, although we haven’t performed an extensive road test on this Bongo due to an overheating issue. Still, the transmission shifts smooth and the ride quality is pleasant from the upgraded suspension. Power is distributed through a full time 4WD system for when the going gets rough. With featherweight steering, attentive brakes, and surprisingly good visibility all the way around, this is a frugal and fun way to visualize your off the grid dreams!
