What changes during 2027

5 chassis on this list cross a 25-year threshold during 2027. Rollover dates below are derived from publicly documented production-start and production-end records (cited in Sources). Individual vehicles become eligible on the 25th anniversary of the build date stamped on the door-jamb compliance plate, not the model year.

Fully eligible — entire production run has crossed the 25-year threshold as of the year shown. Partially eligible — early production units are eligible; later units are not yet. Not yet eligible — earliest production date is still under 25 years from the year shown. Eligibility is calculated from the individual vehicle's manufacture date on the door-jamb compliance plate, not the model year.

FAQ

Common questions about US JDM import eligibility

What JDM cars become legal to import to the US in 2026?
Under the US 25-year rule (49 CFR 571.7 / 49 CFR Part 591), vehicles manufactured 25 or more years ago are exempt from NHTSA FMVSS and EPA emissions conformance for personal-use import. That means cars with a build date in calendar year 2001 reach eligibility month-by-month through 2026 — a February 2001 build becomes eligible in February 2026, a November 2001 build in November 2026. The eligibility calendar on this page lists the chassis-by-chassis status for every major JDM platform.

Is the R34 Skyline legal in the US yet?
It depends on the specific car's build date. The Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 (BNR34) was produced from January 1999 through 2002. Units with a January 1999 build date became eligible for 25-year-exempt import in January 2024; a car built in mid-2002 will not clear the threshold until 2027. Eligibility is determined by the manufacture date stamped on the door-jamb compliance plate, not the model year. Check the specific VIN's build date before purchasing.
The 25-year rule explained
Why was the R34 illegal to import to the US?
The R34 was never illegal to own in the US — the restriction applied to importing it. Under 49 CFR Part 591, a vehicle under 25 years old cannot be imported for road use without meeting full NHTSA Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) conformance, which typically requires a licensed Registered Importer and costs thousands of dollars in modifications. The R34 was simply too new to qualify for the 25-year exemption. Now that early-production R34s have crossed the 25-year threshold, those specific units can be imported under the standard personal-use exemption without FMVSS compliance.
Is import eligibility based on model year or build date?
Build date — specifically the month and year of manufacture recorded on the door-jamb compliance plate. A car sold as a "2001 model" but built in February 2001 is not eligible until February 2026; a 2001-model car built in November 2001 is not eligible until November 2026. CBP enforces eligibility on a per-VIN basis using the build date from the Japanese export/deregistration certificate, not the model year designation.
What is the 25-year import rule?
The 25-year rule is the common name for two overlapping US federal provisions: 49 CFR 571.7(e), which exempts vehicles 25 years old or older from NHTSA Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) conformance, and 40 CFR 85.1511, which provides a parallel EPA emissions exemption for vehicles 21 years old or older. Together they allow personal-use import of a qualifying vehicle without the costly FMVSS modification process required for newer vehicles. CBP enforces the age threshold at the port of entry using 49 CFR Part 591. A 2.5% ad valorem import duty still applies regardless of age.

Can you import an R34 GT-R to the USA now?
Yes, if the specific vehicle's build date is 25 or more years in the past. Early-production BNR34s (January–December 1999 build dates) have been eligible since 2024. Mid-production units (2000–early 2002) are currently crossing or approaching eligibility. Units produced in mid-to-late 2002 remain ineligible until 2027. Alternatively, a younger R34 can enter via an NHTSA Registered Importer performing full FMVSS conformance, or under the narrow Show-or-Display exemption — both are costly and low-volume paths. For most buyers, verifying the build date and waiting for 25-year eligibility is the practical route.
