What changes during 2027

7 chassis on this list cross a 25-year threshold during 2027. These are conservative year-level status changes derived from chassis production years. The table does not contain manufacture months. Individual vehicles reach NHTSA's threshold on the 25th anniversary of manufacture, and EPA eligibility must be evaluated separately.

Fully eligible — entire production run has crossed the 25-year threshold as of the year shown.Partially eligible — early production units are eligible; later units are not yet.Not yet eligible — earliest production date is still under 25 years from the year shown. This is a conservative year-level planning status. Exact NHTSA eligibility is based on the individual vehicle's manufacture date, not the model year; EPA and state registration are separate.

FAQ

Common questions about US JDM import eligibility

What JDM cars become legal to import to the US in 2026?
Under NHTSA's 25-year provision (49 CFR 571.7 and Part 591), vehicles manufactured in 2001 reach the FMVSS age threshold on their individual 25th anniversaries during 2026. EPA eligibility is separate and its over-21-year route depends on an original-equivalent engine. This calendar uses chassis production years only, so verify the actual vehicle's manufacture record before purchase or shipment.

Is the R34 Skyline legal in the US yet?
It depends on the specific car's manufacture date. BNR34 production spans 1999 through 2002, so earlier cars have crossed NHTSA's 25-year threshold while later 2002 cars do so during 2027. Verify the date using credible manufacturer or official vehicle records for that chassis number; a model year or chassis-wide production range is not enough.
The 25-year rule explained
Why was the R34 illegal to import to the US?
The R34 was never illegal to own in the US — the restriction applied to importing it. Under 49 CFR Part 591, a vehicle under 25 years old cannot be imported for road use without meeting full NHTSA Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) conformance, which typically requires a licensed Registered Importer and costs thousands of dollars in modifications. The R34 was simply too new to qualify for the 25-year exemption. Now that early-production R34s have crossed the 25-year threshold, those specific units can be imported under the standard personal-use exemption without FMVSS compliance.
Is import eligibility based on model year or build date?
Actual manufacture date, not model year. A vehicle manufactured in February 2001 reached 25 years in February 2026; one manufactured in November 2001 does not reach it until November 2026. Use credible records for the exact vehicle and confirm ambiguous evidence with NHTSA or the broker before shipment.
What is the 25-year import rule?
The 25-year rule is the common name for NHTSA's treatment of a vehicle manufactured at least 25 years before entry as outside FMVSS, reflected in 49 CFR 571.7 and Part 591. EPA is not part of the same age rule: its current over-21-year route depends on an engine identical to, or equivalent to, the originally installed engine. Customs classification and duty are also separate.

Can you import an R34 GT-R to the USA now?
Yes, if the exact BNR34 was manufactured at least 25 years before entry and the separate EPA and Customs requirements are satisfied. Vehicles manufactured during 2002 reach the NHTSA threshold on their individual anniversaries during 2027. A younger vehicle needs a valid alternative federal route; do not assume a predictable conversion cost or eligibility without an NHTSA determination.
