Background

Overview

The Z33 (2002-2009) is the recovery Z — launched under Carlos Ghosn's mandate to make Nissan profitable again after Renault's 1999 acquisition. Engineered to compete with the Porsche Boxster, BMW Z4, and Ford Mustang at a sub-$30,000 US sticker, the Z33 used the VQ35DE (already in service across the Nissan/Infiniti lineup, which kept tooling costs down) and reused the FM (Front Midship) platform from the Infiniti G35. Strict 2-seater coupe through 2003, with a roadster from 2004 onward. The VQ35HR replaced the VQ35DE mid-cycle in 2007, with higher revs, dual intake plenums, and revised oiling.

Z33 valuation today rewards unmodified 6MT cars in good cosmetic condition. NISMO 350Z trims command premiums when stock. The VQ engines' design oil consumption rate (sometimes 1 quart per 1,000 miles on track-used cars) is a feature, not a fault — owners who treat the oil-consumption pattern as a defect rather than a maintenance task are the source of most reliability complaints in this generation. CSC (concentric slave cylinder) clutch hydraulics and dual-mass flywheel rattle are the two known weak points; both have known aftermarket solutions.
