Quick answer

The SG is the second-generation Forester sold in Japan from 12 February 2002. SG5 covers the 137 PS X20 and the 220 PS XT and Cross Sports turbos; the SG9 STi Version, from 3 February 2004, has a 265 PS 2.5-litre turbo and six-speed manual and is not the US XT.

Background

Overview

The SG is the second-generation Subaru Forester, launched in Japan on 12 February 2002 with 2.0-litre SG5 engines. The STi Version of 3 February 2004 is a separate SG9 with a 2.5-litre turbo and six-speed manual, which UK press describes as sold only in Japan. The US 2.5XT is a different car.

Read the type designation first. SG5 is on the 137 PS X20 and the 220 PS XT and Cross Sports turbos; the STi Version is the SG9, with 265 PS, a six-speed manual and Brembo brakes. A badge alone does not make an STi Version.

Recall 1220 covers some turbo manual SG5s built from January 2002 to February 2003, and recall 1788 covers some HID cars with the optional auto-light built from December 2005 to September 2006. Confirm both by chassis number.

Identification

Chassis-code reference

Generation names are broad families. The factory chassis codes below identify the variants represented in JDMBUYSELL's current Subaru Forester guide data.

Chassis codes: SG5 and SG9

Confirm the complete code on the vehicle's frame or VIN plate; drivetrain, body, and market variants can use different prefixes within one generation family.

Key Takeaways

  • The Japanese XT is a 2.0-litre EJ20 turbo at 220 PS; the US model-year 2004 2.5XT is a separate 2.5-litre, 210 hp specification.
  • The STi Version is the SG9: 265 PS (195 kW) net, 378 N·m, six-speed manual, Brembo brakes and front and rear LSDs.
  • Cross Sports offers a manual: the original turbo came with 5MT or Sportshift E-4AT, and the 2005 2.0T with 5MT or E-4AT.
  • An STi badge on an SG5 does not make an STi Version. Check for SG9, the six-speed manual and Brembo brakes.
  • Recall 1220 covers some turbo manual SG5s built January 2002 to February 2003 for oil-control-valve cover bolts.
  • Subaru's 479,503 second-generation figure stops at 17 February 2006, so it is not final SG production.

Background

Grades and codes

The launch range, announced and on sale on 12 February 2002, was the X and X20 (2.0-litre SOHC, naturally aspirated) and the XT (2.0-litre DOHC turbo), all TA-SG5. The naturally aspirated cars came with E-4AT or a dual-range five-speed manual; the XT with E-4AT or a five-speed manual. In the first two weeks Subaru reported 3,000 orders: 60.0% XT, 39.7% X20 and 0.3% X.

That is an order sample, not production. The Cross Sports followed in October 2002, the L.L.Bean editions (X20 and XT) were in the February 2004 range, and the STi Version arrived on 3 February 2004. Subaru's retrospective lists a major revision in January 2005.

Launch XT and X20

Subaru's February 2002 catalogue rates the XT manual at 220 PS (162 kW) at 5,500 rpm and 309 N·m at 3,500 rpm from the intercooled-turbo EJ20. It is 4,450 × 1,735 × 1,585 mm and 1,390 kg, on 215/60R16 tyres with rear discs, and takes premium unleaded. The X20 manual is rated 137 PS (101 kW) and 186 N·m, weighs 1,320 kg, runs 205/70R15 tyres on rear drums, and takes regular from a 50-litre tank. Subaru quotes 200 mm of ground clearance and a 600 mm hip point, and claims about 30 kg less weight than the previous model from body-structure changes and aluminium.

Cross Sports

Cross Sports was announced on 24 October 2002 and went on sale on 31 October. The original car has the 2.0-litre turbo with a five-speed manual or a Sportshift E-4AT; the automatic uses VTD-4WD. Subaru lowered it (ground clearance down 30 mm) and held the height to 1,550 mm for multistorey car parks, with inverted front struts.

The October 2002 manual is rated 220 PS and 309 N·m, weighs 1,410 kg and runs 215/55R16 tyres. The revision on sale from 24 June 2005 offers a 2.0i (SOHC, E-4AT) and a 2.0T (turbo, 5MT or E-4AT), with upright front struts and 215/55R17 summer tyres. The 2.0T automatic has VTD-AWD.

STi Version

Subaru announced the STi Version and put it on sale on 3 February 2004. It uses the 2.5-litre EJ25 turbo rated at 195 kW (265 PS) at 5,600 rpm and 378 N·m at 3,600 rpm net, with a dedicated six-speed manual, torque-sensitive limited-slip differentials front and rear, Brembo brakes and 225/45R18 tyres on 18-inch cast wheels.

The April 2004 catalogue lists the TA-SG9 at 1,490 kg and 8.2:1. The seats are dedicated STi-logo buckets with Alcantara. UK press quotes the standard imported car at 260 bhp, a different unit from Subaru's PS. A revised STI Version was announced on 25 April 2005 and went on sale on 6 May 2005.

Is it a genuine STi Version?

Check the chassis number is SG9, the gearbox is the six-speed manual, the brakes are Brembo and the dedicated equipment matches Subaru's specification. Every other documented Japanese SG grade is a 2.0-litre SG5 with a five-speed manual or E-4AT, so an SG5 with STi badges is not an STi Version. Subaru's release lists torque-sensitive limited-slip differentials at the front and rear and does not mention a centre differential or DCCD; no source here establishes DCCD. STi Version production, colour split and surviving-car counts are not established, so no rarity claim is made.

Recalls

Recall 1220, filed 15 September 2004, covers turbocharged manual cars: low axial force on the oil-control-valve cover bolts could let them loosen under sustained high load and rpm, leaking oil and, in the worst case, causing fire. The remedy is to retighten the bolts. The SG range is SG5-002008 to SG5-035644, built 25 January 2002 to 6 February 2003 (2,749 Foresters listed).

Recall 1788, filed 7 December 2006, covers HID cars fitted with the optional auto-light, where the headlamp auto-levelling might not work; the remedy adds wiring. It lists SG5-103001 to SG5-115845 and SG9-007001 to SG9-007505, built December 2005 to September 2006. Ranges can include unaffected cars, so use Subaru's lookup or a dealer.

Importing an SG

US: the age-based safety exemption under 49 CFR 591.5(i) applies at 25 years from the individual car's manufacture date. EPA code E separately uses calendar-year age of at least 21 and requires original unmodified configuration. A replacement engine must be the original model or come, with any aftertreatment, from a certified vehicle no older than the imported car. State rules vary.

Canada: vehicles older than 15 years are outside the Motor Vehicle Safety Act at import; age is primarily the manufacture month and year. CBSA entry requirements still apply. Provincial registration is separate, and some provinces refuse right-hand-drive cars.

US and UK cars

Car and Driver describes the US model-year 2004 2.5XT as a custom-made 2.5-litre DOHC turbo rated 210 hp and 235 lb-ft. That is a US specification and does not describe the Japanese 220 PS XT. UK press says the Forester STI was only sold in the Japanese Domestic Market, so a US-market XT is not a factory STi Version, and UK STi cars are imports. UK-market and other export specifications are outside this page.

Technical Specifications

Figures are Subaru's Japanese catalogue and press ratings in PS and kW, each tied to its date and grade. STi Version output is net. Vehicle mass is catalogue mass, not gross weight.

Should You Buy a Subaru Forester SG?

Points come from Subaru's releases and catalogues and from the two recall filings.

Why You'll Love It

  • A documented performance model Subaru's February 2004 release and April 2004 catalogue give the STi Version's engine, output, gearbox, brakes, tyres and mass, so a car can be checked against them.
  • Manual choices The XT came with a five-speed manual, the original Cross Sports turbo had one, and the STi Version has a dedicated six-speed.
  • Ground clearance Subaru quotes 200 mm minimum ground clearance for the standard-height launch cars.
  • Published recall trail Recalls 1220 and 1788 are published by chassis number, so completion can be checked for an individual car.

Why You Might Not

  • SG5 spans 137 to 220 PS The same code covers the naturally aspirated X20 (137 PS) and the turbo XT and Cross Sports (220 PS), so the grade must be read from the full designation.
  • STi Version identity needs checking Badges and parts can be added to other cars, and Subaru's specification is the reference for SG9, six-speed manual and Brembo brakes.
  • Lowered Cross Sports Subaru built the original Cross Sports for town use: ground clearance is down 30 mm and overall height is held to 1,550 mm.
  • Turbo manual recall Recall 1220 describes oil leakage and, in the worst case, fire from loose oil-control-valve bolts on turbo manual cars.

Who Should NOT Buy This

  • Anyone who wants a stock 300 hp Forester: Subaru rates the STi Version at 265 PS net.
  • Anyone buying a US-market XT as an STi: UK press says the Forester STI was only sold in Japan.
  • Anyone planning a US import without checking EPA's configuration and replacement-engine requirements.

Common Issues & Solutions

Both entries are Subaru recall filings.

Issue Cause Solution
Oil-control-valve cover bolts (recall 1220) Subaru's filing says low bolt force on turbocharged manual cars could let the bolts loosen under sustained high load and rpm, leaking oil and, in the worst case, causing fire. Check the chassis number against SG5-002008 to SG5-035644 and confirm the bolts were retightened with Subaru or a dealer.
Headlamp auto-levelling (recall 1788) On HID cars with the optional auto-light, Subaru says an unsuitable electrical circuit might stop the headlamp auto-levelling working. Check the chassis number against the 1788 ranges and ask for evidence the corrective wiring was added.

Differences between JDM & USDM

This page covers Japanese-market cars and uses Subaru's Japanese catalogue ratings in PS and kW. UK press says the Forester STI was only sold in Japan, so UK STi cars are imports. Car and Driver's model-year 2004 US 2.5XT is a separate 2.5-litre, 210 hp specification and its figures should not be applied to a Japanese XT.

The Buyer's Read

Start with the plate. SG5 is the 2.0-litre family: the 137 PS X20, the 220 PS XT and the Cross Sports. The STi Version is the SG9 with a 2.5-litre turbo at 265 PS. Subaru's catalogues separate them by engine, output, mass and brakes.

If the car claims to be an STi Version, check the hardware against Subaru's list: six-speed manual, Brembo brakes, front and rear limited-slip differentials, 18-inch wheels and the dedicated seats. A badge on an SG5 proves nothing.

Then check recall 1220 on any turbo manual and recall 1788 on HID cars, both by chassis number. Do not use the US 2.5XT's 210 hp as a guide to a Japanese XT. Finally, judge import age from the individual car's documented build date and check EPA's engine rule if you plan to import to the US.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Japanese XT and a US XT?
The Japanese XT is a 2.0-litre EJ20 turbo rated 220 PS at launch. Car and Driver describes the US model-year 2004 2.5XT as a 2.5-litre turbo rated 210 hp. They are separate specifications with separate figures.
How much power does a stock STi Version make?
Subaru rates it at 195 kW (265 PS) net at 5,600 rpm with 378 N·m at 3,600 rpm. UK press quotes the standard imported car at 260 bhp, a different unit.
Does the Forester STi have DCCD?
Subaru's February 2004 release lists torque-sensitive limited-slip differentials at the front and rear and does not mention a centre differential or DCCD. No source here establishes DCCD, so do not assume it.
Is the Cross Sports automatic only?
No. The original turbo Cross Sports came with a five-speed manual or a Sportshift E-4AT. The 2005 revision lists a 2.0i with E-4AT and a 2.0T with 5MT or E-4AT.
Is every STi-badged SG a genuine STi Version?
No. The STi Version is SG9 with a six-speed manual and Brembo brakes. Other documented Japanese SG grades are 2.0-litre SG5 cars, so check hardware and chassis number together.
When can my SG STi be imported to the US?
The US 25-year rule is judged on each car's own build date, not the February 2004 introduction. EPA's age route also requires original configuration, a same-model replacement engine, or an engine with aftertreatment from a certified vehicle no older than the car. Canada uses 15 years from the manufacture month and year.
