Quick answer

This hub covers the Japanese Toyota HiAce, a cab-over van sold as a Wagon, a Van and a Commuter, in two generations: the H100, released on 24 August 1989, and the H200, on sale from 23 August 2004 and still updated in 2026. Use the generation pages for engines, grades, recalls and import age.

Background

Overview

The Toyota HiAce is a cab-over van that Toyota sells in Japan as a Wagon, a Van and a Commuter. This hub covers two generations: the H100, released on 24 August 1989, and the H200, on sale from 23 August 2004. Earlier generations and the overseas series are not covered; use the generation pages for engines, recalls and import age.

Quick read

Key takeaways

  • Two generation pages: the H100 (released 24 August 1989) and the H200 (on sale from 23 August 2004).
  • Engines depend on date: the H100 used RZ petrols and 2L-T, 3L, 5L and 1KZ-TE diesels; the H200 gained the 1KD-FTV (2007) and 1GD-FTV (2017).
  • The H200 is still on sale in Japan: Toyota issued updates on 2 February and 1 July 2026.
  • Toyota's 4WD became full-time in August 1993, with no centre-differential lock or auxiliary transmission.
  • Import age is judged per car from its manufacture date; EPA's engine rule and Canada's bus rule apply separately.

Constants

Common across all HiAce generations

  • Cab-over van layout in Wagon, Van and Commuter bodies
  • Rear-wheel drive or 4WD depending on configuration; Toyota's 4WD became full-time in August 1993
  • Petrol and diesel engines that change by body and date
  • Japanese-market records only; export specifications need separate evidence

Chassis history

Generation timeline

Dates are Toyota's Japanese release or sale dates. Each generation page has its own specification tables and checklist.

H100

Fourth generation — H100 (1989–2004)

H200

Fifth generation — H200 (2004–present)

Identification

Chassis-code reference

Generation names are broad families. The factory chassis codes below identify the variants represented in JDMBUYSELL's current Toyota HiAce guide data.

Fourth generation — H100 (1989–2004)
Chassis code: KZH100
Fifth generation — H200 (2004–present)
Chassis codes: KDH201V, KDH221K, TRH224W, and GDH201V

Confirm the complete code on the vehicle's frame or VIN plate; drivetrain, body, and market variants can use different prefixes within one generation family.

Market

Differences between JDM & USDM

This guide covers the Japanese HiAce and uses Toyota's Japanese releases, sheets and ratings. The overseas series that Toyota unveiled in the Philippines in 2019 is separate, and no export-market specification is stated here.

The buyer's read

Choose the generation first, then the build date. The H100 is dated from 24 August 1989 and its engines change by body and year; the H200 is dated update by update from 23 August 2004.

Then confirm the body and engine from the plate. For a diesel H200, ask for proof of Toyota's 2012 and 2016 recall work, and check the AdBlue records on a 1GD-FTV.

Last, work out the car's age from its manufacture date. EPA's engine rule applies separately, and Canada treats buses under a different rule, which a Commuter buyer should check.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which HiAce generations does this hub cover?
The H100, released in Japan on 24 August 1989, and the H200, on sale from 23 August 2004. Earlier generations and the overseas series are not covered.
Is the H200 still on sale in Japan?
Yes. Toyota said in 2019 that the current model would continue to be sold in Japan as-is, and it issued updates that went on sale on 2 February and 1 July 2026.
Which diesel engines did the H100 and H200 use?
The H100 used the 2L-T, 3L, 5L and 1KZ-TE, depending on body and date. The H200 began with the 2KD-FTV and gained the 1KD-FTV on 20 August 2007 and the 1GD-FTV on 1 December 2017.
Can I import a HiAce to the US or Canada?
The US 25-year rule runs from each car's manufacture date, and EPA separately expects the original-design engine or a certified replacement. Canada counts 15 years from the manufacture month and treats buses separately.
