Quick answer

Subaru's Japanese Legacy has four generations on this site: BC/BF (from February 1989), BD/BG (October 1993), BE/BH (the wagon in June 1998, the B4 sedan in December 1998) and BL/BP (the wagon in May 2003, the B4 in June 2003). The chassis code rarely names the grade, so read the full type code, engine and gearbox.

Background

Overview

The Subaru Legacy covered here is the Japanese-market range of four generations: the BC from February 1989, the BD from October 1993, the BE from December 1998 and the BL from June 2003. Each route code names the sedan, and the paired Touring Wagon code (BF, BG, BH, BP) is covered on the same page. Use the generation pages for grades, recalls and import details.

Quick read

Key takeaways

  • Each route is named for the sedan; the Touring Wagon uses a paired code: BF, BG, BH and BP.
  • Type codes are shared across grades: BC5 covers the RS and the VZ, BD5 covers turbo and naturally aspirated cars, and GF-BE5 covers the RS and the RSK.
  • The 250T badge does not mean turbo: the second-generation 250T is a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre.
  • Gearbox and date change output: the second-generation GT-B is 280 PS manual and 260 PS automatic, and the fourth-generation spec.B manual became a six-speed in May 2006.
  • Subaru and STI publish edition limits of 200 for the Touring Wagon STi, 400 for the S401 and 600 for each listed tuned by STI edition. Subaru announced a 402-car S402 limit; STI's later heritage page describes 402 as produced.
  • Each generation has a recall to check by chassis number: 479, 481, 4469 and 1342.

Constants

Common across all Legacy generations

  • Horizontally opposed (boxer) engine
  • All-wheel drive available throughout the model's production history
  • Sedan and wagon (estate) body styles across all generations
  • Most JDM turbo grades used the EJ20; the S402 used a turbo EJ25

The buyer's read

Pick the generation first (BC, BD, BE or BL), then read the full type code and the engine. The first two generations date from February 1989 and October 1993, the third from 1998 with the B4 sedan, and the fourth from 2003.

Gearbox and date matter more than the badge: the second-generation GT-B is 280 PS manual and 260 PS automatic, and the fourth-generation 2.0GT spec.B manual became a six-speed on 24 May 2006. Subaru and STI publish announced limits for these special editions; STI's retrospective S402 heritage page also describes 402 units as produced.

Check each car's recall by chassis number, and work out its age from its manufacture date before planning a US or Canadian import.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which Legacy code is the sedan and which is the wagon?
Each route is named for the sedan: BC, BD, BE and BL. The Touring Wagon uses BF, BG, BH and BP. The B4 name for the sedan arrived with the third generation, in December 1998.
Is every Legacy GT or RS a turbo?
Not by code alone. Subaru's catalogues use the same type for turbo and naturally aspirated grades, such as BC5 for the RS and the VZ, and GF-BE5 for the RS and the RSK. Check the engine and the full designation.
Can I import a Legacy to the US or Canada?
The US 25-year rule is judged on each car's own build date. EPA's over-21-years exemption requires the original engine model and configuration, or an equivalent or newer EPA-certified replacement with its emission controls. Canada counts 15 years from the month and year of manufacture. State rules differ.
