Key Takeaways
- BC5 does not mean RS. Subaru's catalogue also lists the naturally aspirated VZ sedan as E-BC5, and the GT wagon is E-BF5.
- Subaru rates the February 1989 RS at 220 PS and the October 1989 GT wagon at 200 PS. These are PS ratings, not SAE horsepower.
- Drivetrain varies by type code: the Vi and E-BC2 manual Mi are front-wheel drive, while the E-BC3 manual Mi has part-time 4WD.
- Japan sold an EJ22 car: the Brighton 220 Touring Wagon, rated 135 PS in the June 1992 catalogue.
- Recall 479 covers numbered BC and BF chassis ranges built from 29 December 1988 to August 1993. Check by chassis number.
- RS mass changed by date: 1,290 kg in the February 1989 catalogue and 1,300 kg in May 1990.
Background
Grades and type codes
Subaru's catalogue lists the Vi as E-BC2 with the 1,820 cc engine, five-speed manual and front-wheel drive. The E-BC3 manual Mi has part-time 4WD; an E-BC2 manual Mi has front-wheel drive. The Ti (E-BC3) uses the EJ18 at 110 PS. The E-BC5 VZ shares its type code with the RS; Subaru also lists a front-wheel-drive E-BC4 VZ. The VZ has manual and automatic versions.
The GT Touring Wagon is E-BF5, the Brighton 220 is E-BF7, and the air-suspension wagons carry their own codes: E-BFA for the VZ and E-BFB for the Brighton 220. A type code therefore gives the body and engine family. The grade and drivetrain come from the full designation and the car itself.
RS and GT turbo cars
The February 1989 RS has an intercooled turbo EJ20 of 1,994 cc rated 220 PS at 6,400 rpm and 27.5 kgf·m at 4,000 rpm. It is a five-speed manual with full-time 4WD and a limited-slip differential as standard, on a 2,580 mm wheelbase, and it uses premium unleaded with a 60-litre tank. First to fifth gears are 3.545, 2.111, 1.448, 1.088 and 0.825, with a 4.111 final drive.
These are Subaru's PS ratings, not SAE horsepower. The GT Touring Wagon is rated lower at 200 PS and 26.5 kgf·m. HKS lists the EJ20G engine for BC5 and BF5 in its application chart; that is a parts maker's fitment chart, not a Subaru build record. Subaru's Cartopia dates the GT wagon to October 1989; its English March 2005 summary says 1993, although that document's chronology says October 1989.
Brighton 220 and the air-suspension wagons
Japan did have a 2.2-litre Legacy. The Brighton 220 Touring Wagon in the June 1992 catalogue uses the naturally aspirated EJ22 of 2,212 cc, rated 135 PS at 5,500 rpm and 19.0 kgf·m at 4,000 rpm, with a four-speed automatic and full-time 4WD. Subaru lists it at 1,370 kg and 4,620 × 1,690 × 1,500 mm. An air-suspension version, E-BFB, is catalogued separately, so check the type code if the car has air springs.
Touring Wagon STi (1992)
STI's first complete car went on sale on 3 August 1992 as a Touring Wagon limited to 200 cars built to order. Subaru says the engine was computer-tuned to 220 PS and the E-4AT was tuned to suit, and that the car carries BBS forged aluminium wheels and a front strut tower brace. The 200 is the announced limit for this edition only, and the page does not state how many were completed.
The 100,000 km record and rallying
Before the launch, three modified RS-based development cars ran 100,000 km at Subaru's Arizona test centre. They started on 2 January 1989 and finished on 21 January, in 447 hours 44 minutes 9.887 seconds, an average of 223.345 km/h. That was an endurance record on modified cars. Subaru's chronology dates Legacy World Rally Championship participation from April 1990 and its first win to the New Zealand rally in August 1993. Those were competition cars, so their figures do not describe road cars.
Recall 479 and importing
Subaru notified recall 479 on 9 July 1997. Some first-generation cars had an insufficiently tightened accessory crank pulley bolt, which can cause noise. Left alone, the bolt can drop out, the pulley can come off and the power steering can lose its function, and in the worst case the engine can stop. The remedy is to retighten the bolt and replace the pulley where its mounting is damaged.
The recall lists BC and BF chassis ranges built between 29 December 1988 and August 1993, so check the chassis number. The US 25-year rule is judged on each car's own build date (49 CFR 591.5(i)), not on model year or launch date. EPA's over-21-years exemption requires the original engine model and configuration, or an equivalent or newer EPA-certified replacement with its emission controls. State registration and emissions rules differ, and Canada counts 15 years from the month and year of manufacture.

Should You Buy a Subaru Legacy BC?
Why You'll Love It
- Documented turbo grades Subaru's catalogues give the RS at 220 PS and the GT wagon at 200 PS, so each car has a published specification to compare with.
- Sedan and wagon, with a choice of drive Subaru catalogued front-wheel drive, part-time 4WD and full-time 4WD grades, in both body styles.
- A published recall trail Subaru's recall 479 lists the affected chassis ranges, so a buyer can confirm completion for a specific car.
- Rally history Subaru's chronology dates Legacy World Rally Championship entry to April 1990 and its first win to August 1993.
Why You Might Not
- The code does not name the grade BC5 is used by the RS and by the naturally aspirated VZ, so check the full designation and the engine.
- Specifications moved over time Catalogue mass for the RS differs between February 1989 and May 1990, so one figure does not describe every car.
Who Should NOT Buy This
- Anyone who plans to identify an RS from the BC5 code alone: the VZ shares it.
- Anyone who assumes every first-generation Legacy is all-wheel drive: Subaru's catalogue lists front-wheel-drive and part-time 4WD grades.
- Anyone planning a US import without checking the engine against EPA's over-21-years exemption: it requires the original engine model and configuration, or an equivalent or newer EPA-certified replacement with its emission controls.
Common Issues & Solutions
| Issue | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Accessory crank pulley bolt (recall 479) | Subaru's recall of 9 July 1997 found some bolts insufficiently tightened. The bolt can fall out and the pulley come off, which can cost power steering and, at worst, stop the engine. | Check the chassis number against the recall ranges and ask for proof the bolt was retightened and the pulley replaced where its mounting was damaged. |
Differences between JDM & USDM
This page describes the Japanese-market cars from Subaru's own Japanese catalogues and press records. US, European and Australian specifications are separate and are not described here. One point carries across: the EJ22 is not an export-only engine, because Subaru's June 1992 catalogue lists it in the Japanese Brighton 220.

The Buyer's Read
Start with the chassis number, not the badge. A BC5 might mean the 220 PS turbo RS or the 150 PS naturally aspirated VZ, and Subaru's February 1989 catalogue separates them by engine, mass and equipment. The GT Touring Wagon is E-BF5. Subaru's heritage library dates the GT sedan to September 1989; its chronology records a GT addition in October without identifying the body.
Then check recall 479. It covers numbered BC and BF ranges built from 29 December 1988 to August 1993, and the remedy was to retighten the crank pulley bolt and replace the pulley where its mounting was damaged. Ask for proof for the car in front of you.
Confirm the drivetrain, because Subaru catalogued front-wheel drive, part-time 4WD and full-time 4WD. If the car is a Brighton 220 or an air-suspension wagon, expect its own type code. Finally, work out the car's age from its manufacture date, and check EPA's engine rule if you plan to import it to the US.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is a BC5 always an RS?
- No. Subaru's February 1989 catalogue lists the RS and the naturally aspirated VZ sedans under E-BC5. The RS is the intercooled turbo EJ20 at 220 PS; the VZ is the naturally aspirated EJ20 at 150 PS.
- How much power did the Japanese RS and GT make?
- Subaru's catalogue rates the February 1989 RS at 220 PS and the October 1989 GT Touring Wagon at 200 PS. These are Japanese PS figures, so do not compare them directly with SAE horsepower.
- Were all first-generation Legacys all-wheel drive?
- No. Subaru's catalogue lists the Vi and E-BC2 manual Mi as front-wheel drive, and the E-BC3 manual Mi with part-time 4WD. The RS, Ti and E-BC5 VZ examples cited here are full-time 4WD.
- Did Japan get a 2.2-litre Legacy?
- Yes. The Brighton 220 Touring Wagon in the June 1992 catalogue uses the EJ22 at 135 PS with a four-speed automatic and full-time 4WD.
- What was the 100,000 km record?
- Three modified RS-based cars ran 100,000 km in Arizona from 2 to 21 January 1989, averaging 223.345 km/h. It was an endurance record set before the launch, on modified cars.
- Can I import a BC or BF to the US or Canada?
- The US 25-year rule is judged on each car's own build date. EPA's over-21-years exemption requires the original engine model and configuration, or an equivalent or newer EPA-certified replacement with its emission controls. Canada counts 15 years from the month and year of manufacture.
