Quick answer

The FD2 is Honda's Japanese four-door Civic Type R, on sale from 30 March 2007 with a 225 PS K20A, a six-speed manual and a helical LSD. Its redline is 8,400 rpm and its standard seats are Honda R spec, with Recaros on the MUGEN RR only. Honda announced production would end in August 2010.

Background

Overview

Honda announced the FD2 Civic Type R on 29 March 2007 and sold it in Japan from 30 March. It is a four-door sedan made at Suzuka, with a 225 PS K20A, a six-speed manual and a helical limited-slip differential. On 19 April 2010 Honda announced that production would end in August 2010.

Identify the car by its full specification: the ABA-FD2 type code, the K20A, the six-speed manual, front Brembo calipers and Honda R spec seats. Recaro seats belong to the MUGEN RR. The serial-numbered aluminium emblem is one check among several.

Honda's limit for the stock engine is 8,400 rpm. The car has no spare tyre or rear-seat load-through, and PistonHeads describes low-speed bumpiness from the stiff springs, so drive one on your own roads.

Background

Codes and identity

Honda's March 2007 specification gives the TYPE R the type code ABA-FD2, a four-door sedan seating four. Honda lists only front-wheel drive and a six-speed manual.

The FD2 is not the only Civic Type R Honda sold in Japan in these years. Honda introduced the three-door TYPE R EURO, built in the UK, in Japan on 5 November 2009, so calling the hatchback Europe-only is incorrect.

K20A engine

The K20A is a naturally aspirated 1,998 cc DOHC i-VTEC (86.0 × 86.0 mm) with 11.7:1 compression and chain-driven DOHC, running on unleaded premium petrol. Honda rates it at 165 kW (225 PS) net at 8,000 rpm and 215 N·m (21.9 kgf·m) at 6,100 rpm. The maximum permissible engine speed is 8,400 rpm and Honda's stock-engine comparison gives a VTEC switching point of 5,800 rpm.

Honda moved to drive-by-wire throttle control and changed the power steering from electric to hydraulic assistance. About 222 mechanical horsepower follows by conversion from 225 PS.

Gearbox, chassis and brakes

The six-speed manual has ratios of 3.266, 2.130, 1.517, 1.147, 0.921 and 0.738 with a 5.062 final drive, and a torque-sensitive helical LSD. Suspension is MacPherson at the front and a reactive-link double-wishbone at the rear.

Brakes are Brembo aluminium opposed four-piston front calipers with 320 mm front and 282 mm rear discs; Honda's "17-inch" brake wording refers to the package, and the rotor sizes are the 320 mm and 282 mm above. Tyres are 225/40R18 88Y Bridgestone Potenza RE070. Honda claims about 50% more body rigidity than the DC5 Integra Type R.

Size, weight and cabin

The car measures 4,540 × 1,770 × 1,430 mm on a 2,700 mm wheelbase and seats four. Honda lists 1,270 kg, or 1,250 kg without air conditioning, under its own vehicle-mass convention. The rear-seat trunk-through mechanism was deleted, and a puncture-repair kit replaced the spare tyre.

The standard front seats are Honda R spec seats in Lux Suede, a suede-look artificial leather from Seiren. The shift knob is aluminium and spherical. A TYPE R aluminium emblem carries a serial number. Launch colours were Championship White, Super Platinum Metallic and Vivid Blue Pearl.

MUGEN RR and the race-base car

M-TEC announced the MUGEN RR complete car on 28 June 2007 and began sales on 13 September 2007, built on specially supplied Type R base cars. It was announced as a 300-car made-to-order allocation, which is not a verified production total. webCG reports 240 PS at 8,000 rpm and 22.2 kgf·m at 7,000 rpm. M-TEC adds dedicated cams, intake and a dual exhaust, five-step adjustable dampers and Recaro-developed semi-bucket seats.

On 13 September 2007 Honda also introduced a competition-only one-make race-base car. Honda states it cannot be registered to obtain number plates.

Production end and markets

Honda's Japanese release of 19 April 2010 says production of the four-door Type R at the Suzuka factory would end at the end of August 2010. American Honda's retrospective labels the FD2 2007–2011; the contemporary Japanese announcement is used here.

Honda Malaysia introduced the Japanese-version four-door Type R new on 2 August 2007, so a car outside Japan is not necessarily a privately imported used car.

Importing

For the US, the federal safety exemption is judged on each car's own manufacture date (49 CFR 591.5(i)): the vehicle must be at least 25 years old, so a model-year label proves nothing and the build month is what counts. EPA's age rule is separate. Its procedure describes 21 original-production years, an original unmodified configuration, and an exception for equivalent or newer EPA-certified engines and emission-control systems.

EPA's current guidance asks for the same engine model and configuration as the original, so consult EPA before relying on it for a modified or swapped car. State registration and emissions rules are not covered here. Canada treats vehicles older than 15 years as non-regulated at import, with age taken from the manufacture month and year; a right-hand-drive car should be checked against the destination province's registration rules.

Should You Buy a Honda Civic FD2?

Strengths and cautions come from Honda's Japanese releases, M-TEC's announcement and PistonHeads.

Why You'll Love It

  • Documented 225 PS engine Honda rates the K20A at 225 PS net at 8,000 rpm and 215 N·m at 6,100 rpm, with an 8,400 rpm limit.
  • Factory LSD and Brembo front brakes Honda lists a torque-sensitive helical LSD and Brembo four-piston front calipers on 320 mm discs.
  • Stiffer body Honda claims about 50% more body rigidity than the DC5 Integra Type R, a named comparison.
  • Dated end of production Honda's Japanese release gives the end of production as August 2010.

Why You Might Not

  • Ride firmness PistonHeads describes stiff springs and aggressive rebound damping that cause low-speed bumpiness.
  • Fewer practical features Honda deleted the rear-seat trunk-through mechanism and the spare tyre, and the car seats four.
  • No settled production total PistonHeads reports around 13,000 Japanese-market FD2s; the figure is approximate and not a Honda ledger.

Who Should NOT Buy This

  • Anyone who expects Recaro seats in a standard car: they belong to the MUGEN RR.
  • Anyone who expects a 9,000 rpm redline: Honda's limit for the stock engine is 8,400 rpm.
  • Anyone who wants a road car from the competition-only race-base specification: Honda says it cannot be registered for number plates in Japan.

Common Issues & Solutions

These are inspection prompts from one UK review and Honda's documented equipment, not failure rates. No repair costs are given.

Issue Cause Solution
Ride comfort PistonHeads reports low-speed bumpiness from stiff springs and aggressive rebound damping on a Japanese-specification car reviewed in the UK. Drive the car on roads like your own before buying.
Missing spare and rear-seat load-through Honda deleted the spare tyre, fitting a puncture-repair kit, and removed the rear-seat trunk-through mechanism. Confirm what the car carries and plan for a puncture on a long trip.
Identity and equipment Cars can differ in seats and options: standard Honda R spec seats, MUGEN RR Recaros, and an option that deletes the automatic air conditioning and HID headlights are all documented. Check the type code, K20A, manual gearbox, Brembo calipers and seats together.

Differences between JDM & USDM

This page describes the Japanese four-door FD2 in Honda's own net PS figures. Honda Malaysia introduced the same Japanese version new in 2007, so a car outside Japan may be an official import. The three-door TYPE R EURO was also sold in Japan from 5 November 2009. It is a separate car, and its specifications are not carried across.

Reported Counts & Rarity

Generation Years Reported Count Notes
FD2 TYPE R (Japan), press report 2007–2010 Around 13,000, as reported PistonHeads reports this approximate Japanese-market figure. American Honda's 13,400 covers the FD2 and the European FN2 together, so it does not corroborate it.
FD2 MUGEN RR, announced allocation 2007 300 planned M-TEC announced a limited, made-to-order run of 300. That is an allocation, not a verified production total.

The Buyer's Read

Start with identity. The FD2 TYPE R is the ABA-FD2 four-door sedan with the K20A, six-speed manual, front Brembo calipers and Honda R spec seats. Recaro seats belong to the MUGEN RR, and Honda's competition-only race-base car cannot be registered for number plates in Japan.

Then check the car. Honda's stock limit is 8,400 rpm, so a 9,000 rpm claim is wrong. PistonHeads describes a stiff ride, and the car has a puncture-repair kit instead of a spare and no rear-seat load-through. Drive one on your own roads.

Production figures are unsettled: PistonHeads reports around 13,000 Japanese-market cars, and the M-TEC MUGEN RR was announced as a 300-car allocation. Honda announced that production would end in August 2010.

Work out import age from the build date, not the model year. For the US, 49 CFR 591.5(i) requires 25 years from manufacture, EPA's engine rule applies separately, and state rules vary. Canada uses 15 years from the manufacture month and year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is every FD2 a Type R?
Honda's March 2007 specification gives the TYPE R the type code ABA-FD2. Check the whole specification, not the FD2 letters alone: the K20A, six-speed manual, front Brembos and Honda R spec seats.
Does the standard FD2 have Recaro seats?
No. The standard front seats are Honda R spec seats. Recaro-developed semi-bucket seats belong to the MUGEN RR.
Is the redline 8,400 or 9,000 rpm?
Honda's factory document gives 8,400 rpm as the maximum permissible engine speed for the stock K20A. A press mention of about 9,000 rpm is not Honda's figure.
Was the FD2 sold outside Japan?
Yes. Honda Malaysia officially introduced the Japanese-version four-door Type R on 2 August 2007. A car outside Japan is not necessarily a privately imported used car.
How many FD2 Type Rs were built?
No Honda ledger was found. PistonHeads reports around 13,000 Japanese-market FD2s from 2007 to 2010, an approximate figure. American Honda's 13,400 covers the FD2 and the European FN2 together.
What makes a genuine MUGEN RR different?
M-TEC announced it on 28 June 2007 as a complete car with dedicated cams, intake and dual exhaust, five-step adjustable dampers and Recaro-developed semi-bucket seats. It was announced as a 300-car allocation.
Can the race-base car be registered for the road?
Honda states that the competition-only one-make race-base car cannot be registered to obtain number plates in Japan.
When can this car be imported to the US or Canada?
The US 25-year rule is judged on each car's own build date, not its model year. EPA's separate age rule expects the original engine model and configuration. Canada counts 15 years from the manufacture month and year, and a province may still restrict registration.
