Examples come from Toyota's brochures. The sources used give no letter-by-letter breakdown, and N300 is this site's route label, not a Toyota code.
Key Takeaways
- Toyota's Japanese records call it the GUN120 series (GUN125); N300 is this site's route label.
- It went on sale on 12 September 2017, had a facelift on 19 August 2020 and was replaced in Japan on 28 May 2026.
- The only engine is the 2.4-litre 2GD-FTV diesel, 150 PS and 400 N·m net, with a six-speed automatic and part-time 4WD.
- Equipment depends on grade and date: the Z gained Auto LSD in 2020 and a navigation display in September 2023.
- Import age is counted per truck from its manufacture date, and EPA separately expects the engine to match the original model and configuration.
- The diesel has a DPF and uses AdBlue, and 2018 to 2019 builds may fall under the 2020 brake-booster recall.
Background
Identity and dates
Toyota's code list calls the 2017 Japanese Hilux the GUN120 series; its 2017 brochure gives QDF-GUN125 designations for the X and Z, and the October 2021 brochure gives 3DF-GUN125. The model went on sale on 12 September 2017, and Toyota's chief engineer said Japanese sales had ended in 2004. The facelift followed on 19 August 2020. Toyota's manual index covers production from September 2017 to July 2020 and from August 2020 to April 2026. A fully remodelled Hilux went on sale in Japan on 28 May 2026, with a 1GD diesel; it is not part of this page.
Engine and drivetrain
The only engine in the Japanese range is the 2GD-FTV, 2,393 cc, common-rail diesel with 92.0 × 90.0 mm bore and stroke, compression ratio 15.6 and an 80-litre tank. Toyota rates it at 110 kW (150 PS) at 3,400 rpm and 400 N·m at 1,600 to 2,000 rpm, net, the same on X, Z and Z GR SPORT. The transmission is the six-speed 6 Super ECT with part-time 4WD. Fuel economy was 11.8 km/L on the JC08 cycle in 2017 and 13.6 km/L on JC08 after the facelift, which also quotes 11.7 km/L on the WLTC cycle; do not compare JC08 and WLTC figures.
Dimensions and capacity
The 2017 X and Z are 5,335 × 1,855 × 1,800 mm on a 3,085 mm wheelbase, with five seats, a 500 kg payload, a 6.4 m turning radius and 215 mm ground clearance. The Z weighs 2,080 kg and the X 2,060 kg. The bed is 1,520 × 1,535 × 480 mm. The October 2021 brochure gives the X and Z as 5,340 × 1,855 × 1,800 mm and the GR SPORT as 5,320 × 1,900 × 1,840 mm and 2,110 kg, on 265/60R18 tyres against 265/65R17. Suspension is front double wishbone with coils and a rear axle on semi-elliptic leaf springs.
Grades and editions
At launch there were two grades, X and Z. The Z Black Rally Edition, a 50th-anniversary special announced on 12 November 2018, went on sale on 17 December 2018 with black wheels, grille and bumpers, overfenders and 18-inch white-letter tyres. The Z GR SPORT arrived on 8 October 2021 with a 1,900 mm-wide body, dedicated suspension, sport seats and paddle shift, but the same 150 PS engine. The Z Revo ROCCO Edition took orders from 22 December 2023, with release planned for about May 2024; it is coachbuilt and needs carry-in registration. No numbered limits were found for these editions.
Changes by date
The August 2020 facelift added idle-stop, improved suspension and variable-flow power steering, and gave the Z Auto LSD and clearance and back sonar. In October 2021 the X gained standard pre-collision safety and lane departure alert and the Z gained independent left-right temperature control. On 28 September 2023 the Z gained a panoramic-view monitor, back monitor and display audio with navigation as standard. Equipment therefore depends on grade and date: check what the individual truck has.
Diesel aftertreatment and AdBlue
Toyota's owner's manual says the diesel burns off trapped soot automatically every few hundred kilometres in normal driving, and the display shows DPF regeneration in progress. Some white smoke, which is water vapour, can appear at start-up or during regeneration. A message may ask for manual regeneration, and another means a dealer inspection.
The exhaust must not be modified. The truck also uses AdBlue: warnings appear at 2,400 km and 800 km of range, and when it runs out the engine cannot be restarted. The distances are a guide.
Brake-booster recall (2020)
Toyota's recall filed on 2 December 2020 says the resin piston in some brake boosters was moulded under improper conditions, so repeated pedal use could break it and lengthen stopping distance. The remedy is to check the booster number and replace qualifying boosters. It covers QDF-GUN125 frames GUN125-3905246 to 3909364, built from 27 July 2018 to 29 March 2019, 4,087 vehicles. The range can include unaffected trucks, so ask a dealer to check the frame number.
Registration and ride
Toyota said in 2017 that as a Class 1 vehicle the Hilux requires annual inspection and incurs slightly higher expressway tolls. In a named 2017 road test of the Z 4WD, webCG's reviewer Sano (佐野弘宗) found the unladen ride hard by any standard but the absolute handling stability not bad, with no cheap noises from the frame or body. That is one reviewer's view of one truck. Toyota builds the Japanese Hilux at Toyota Motor Thailand's Ban Pho plant.
Importing to the US and Canada
US: the federal safety-standard exemption (49 CFR 591.5(i)) covers a vehicle 25 or more years old, counted from the individual truck's own manufacture date. EPA separately expects the engine to be the same model and configuration as the original; check any replacement with EPA. Canada: vehicles older than 15 years, with age set by manufacture month and year; Toyota's manual index lists production from September 2017, which reaches 15 years in September 2032. State and provincial registration, including right-hand-drive rules, are separate.

Should You Buy a Toyota Hilux N300?
Why You'll Love It
- Modern safety and 4WD at launch At the 2017 launch, Z had standard pre-collision safety with pedestrian detection and lane departure alert. Both X and Z had dial-selected part-time 4WD; X gained those standard safety features in October 2021.
- A tolerable ride, per one named test webCG's 2017 test found the unladen ride hard but the handling stability not bad and no cheap noises from the frame or body.
- Updated equipment over time The 2020 facelift added Auto LSD and clearance sonar on the Z, and the 2023 update added a panoramic-view monitor and navigation audio.
- Official special editions Toyota offered a Black Rally Edition, Z GR SPORT and Revo ROCCO Edition in Japan, with documented equipment.
Why You Might Not
- Hard unladen ride webCG's named 2017 test calls the unladen ride hard by any standard.
- Diesel aftertreatment to manage The diesel has a DPF that burns off soot, may show white vapour, needs a correct exhaust, and uses AdBlue; running out stops restarts.
- Recall on some 2018 to 2019 builds Toyota's 2020 brake-booster recall covers a listed frame range; check the frame number.
- Commercial registration costs Toyota says Class 1 registration means annual inspection and slightly higher expressway tolls in Japan.
Who Should NOT Buy This
- Anyone who cannot confirm the brake-booster recall check on a truck built from July 2018 to March 2019.
- Anyone who will not manage a diesel DPF and AdBlue, or who plans to modify the exhaust: Toyota's manual says not to.
- Anyone who assumes every grade has navigation, safety aids and a panoramic monitor: Toyota added them by grade and date from 2020 to 2023.
Common Issues & Solutions
| Issue | Cause | Solution | Est. Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brake-booster recall (Japan, 2020) | Toyota says the resin piston in some brake boosters was moulded under inappropriate conditions; repeated pedal use could break it, reduce assistance and lengthen stopping distance. | Check the frame number against GUN125-3905246 to 3909364 (built 27 July 2018 to 29 March 2019) and ask for proof of booster replacement if applicable. | Recall remedy; confirm status |
| DPF regeneration messages | Toyota's manual says soot is burned off automatically every few hundred kilometres, and a message may ask for manual regeneration; another message means a dealer inspection. | Follow the manual's message guidance, do not modify the exhaust, and have a regeneration-unavailable message inspected at a dealer. | Per manual and dealer |
| AdBlue running out | The truck uses AdBlue; warnings appear at about 2,400 km and 800 km of range, and the engine cannot restart when it is empty. Distances are only a guide. | Refill when the first warning appears; Toyota recommends refilling at a dealer. | Consumable |

The Buyer's Read
Begin with the designation and grade. Toyota's records call this model the GUN120 series, with QDF-GUN125 designations in 2017 and 3DF-GUN125 in the October 2021 brochure, and the equipment changed by grade and date: Auto LSD and clearance sonar on the Z in 2020, a navigation display and panoramic-view monitor on the Z in September 2023.
If the truck was built between 27 July 2018 and 29 March 2019, check its frame number against Toyota's brake-booster recall and ask for proof of the check. Then deal with the diesel: Toyota's manual describes a DPF that burns off soot, possible white vapour, a ban on modifying the exhaust, and AdBlue that stops the engine restarting when empty.
For importing, the US 25-year rule counts from each truck's manufacture date, and EPA separately expects the engine to match the original model and configuration. Canada's 15-year rule also counts by manufacture month and year. State, provincial and right-hand-drive registration rules are separate.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the N300 Hilux?
- It is the Japanese-specification Hilux pickup Toyota reintroduced in Japan on 12 September 2017, after Japanese sales ended in 2004. Toyota's records name it the GUN120 series (GUN125). N300 is this site's label. A new Hilux replaced it in Japan on 28 May 2026.
- What engine and output does it have?
- Only the 2GD-FTV, a 2.393-litre common-rail diesel rated 110 kW (150 PS) at 3,400 rpm and 400 N·m at 1,600 to 2,000 rpm, net, with a six-speed automatic and part-time 4WD. The Z GR SPORT has the same output. The 2.8-litre 1GD belongs to the 2026 successor.
- How big is it and what can it carry?
- The 2017 X and Z are 5,335 × 1,855 × 1,800 mm on a 3,085 mm wheelbase, seat five and carry 500 kg; the Z weighs 2,080 kg. The GR SPORT is 5,320 × 1,900 × 1,840 mm. The bed is 1,520 × 1,535 × 480 mm.
- What does Class 1 registration mean?
- Toyota said in 2017 that as a Class 1 vehicle the Hilux requires annual inspection and incurs slightly higher expressway tolls in Japan. That is a Japanese registration fact; it does not describe US or Canadian registration.
- Which editions did Japan get?
- X and Z at launch; the Z Black Rally Edition (on sale 17 December 2018); the Z GR SPORT (8 October 2021); and the Z Revo ROCCO Edition (orders from 22 December 2023, release planned for about May 2024). No numbered production limits were found.
- What should I know about the diesel's DPF and AdBlue?
- Toyota's manual says soot is burned off automatically every few hundred kilometres, the display shows DPF regeneration, and white vapour can appear. The exhaust must not be modified. The truck uses AdBlue, and when it runs out the engine cannot restart; follow the manual's warnings.
- Is it comfortable?
- One named 2017 road test of the Z 4WD found the unladen ride hard by any standard, but no cheap noises from the frame or body, and absolute handling stability not bad. It is a truck rated for a 500 kg payload, so judge it on a drive.
- Can I import an N300 Hilux to the US or Canada?
- Not yet under the ordinary age routes. US federal safety eligibility counts 25 years from each truck's manufacture date. Canada's older-vehicle rule uses manufacture month and year; Toyota's manual index lists production from September 2017, which reaches 15 years in September 2032. EPA separately expects the engine to be the same model and configuration as the original. Check replacements with EPA and registration with the relevant state or province.
