Quick answer
These guides cover Toyota's Japanese-market Crown from the eighth-generation S130 (1987) to the thirteenth-generation S200 (launched 2008). Each generation has its own page because body, engine and import age depend on the model number and build month: the sedan, wagon and van outlived some hardtop redesigns, and the Majesta is a separate model.
Background
These guides cover Toyota's Japanese-market Crown from the eighth-generation S130, launched in 1987, to the thirteenth-generation S200, launched in 2008. Sedan, wagon and van bodies overlapped hardtop redesigns, so choose the guide by body and build month. Royal and Athlete are Crown series; the Majesta is a separate model.
The Majesta launched on 28 October 1991 as a separate high-end model between the Crown and the Celsior. It used a monocoque body while the Royal kept a perimeter frame. The Athlete subname returned in September 1999 as the sporty series, which Toyota's catalogue called an extension of the old Royal Touring. Each is a different buying brief under one badge.

The Crown Royal hardtop dropped its perimeter frame in August 1995 for a monocoque body on the Mark II platform; the redesigned sedan followed in December. The inline-six engines gave way to D-4 direct-injection V6 engines in December 2003, and a full hybrid joined the range in May 2008. Availability depends on build date: Toyota's heritage history dates the eighth-generation V8 to August 1989 and the 2.5 to August 1990.

Start with the body and the full model number. A 1992 to 1995 sedan, wagon or van is an eighth-generation car, not the redesigned hardtop. Then check the build month for import age and the recall notices for the chassis range.

Constants
Chassis history
Dates are Toyota Japan's release dates for each body; they are not export model years.
Identification
Generation names are broad families. The factory chassis codes below identify the variants represented in JDMBUYSELL's current Toyota Crown guide data.
Confirm the complete code on the vehicle's frame or VIN plate; drivetrain, body, and market variants can use different prefixes within one generation family.
Market
These guides describe Japanese-market Crowns using Toyota Japan's sources; export versions and Chinese-built Crowns are not covered. For a US import, NHTSA's 25-year safety exemption runs from the individual vehicle's manufacture date (49 CFR 591.5(i)). EPA's separate older-vehicle provision generally requires the original engine model and configuration; qualifying equivalent or newer EPA-certified replacement engines and emission-control systems may also be accepted. State registration rules vary. Canada uses a 15-year threshold by manufacture month and year; importation does not guarantee provincial registration. Every car must be counted from its own build month, not from the generation's launch.

Editorial
Pick the generation by body and build month, then read that generation's guide. The sedan, wagon and van stayed on the eighth-generation design after the hardtop was redesigned in October 1991, so a 1992 to 1995 Crown can still be an S130.
Match the full model number to Toyota's tables: it separates engine and drive on the S170 and S180, and it separates Royal, Hybrid and Majesta on the S200. Ask for recall proof by chassis number where Toyota published a range, and remember the ranges include some unaffected cars.
Count import age from the documented build month: 25 years for the US federal exemption (49 CFR 591.5(i)) and 15 years for Canada. If you plan a US import, check EPA's older-vehicle rule, which also provides for qualifying certified replacement engines and emission-control systems. See the crown S140 guide.
