Vehicles over 40 years are MOT-exempt. The UK drives on the left, making RHD Japanese vehicles directly compatible. Do I need IVA approval for a JDM import in the UK?

Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) is required for most vehicles imported into the UK that do not hold a UK or EU type approval. Older vehicles (pre-1998 approximate) may be easier to approve. Is import duty reduced under the UK-Japan trade deal?

Yes. Under the UK-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA, effective January 2021), Japanese-made passenger cars now qualify for 0% UK import duty, provided the exporter supplies a statement on origin. Without it, the standard 10% rate applies. VAT is 20% on the full value, except for qualifying historic vehicles (made 30+ years ago, historically correct and unmodified, model no longer in production), where VAT is charged at 20% on 25% of the value - an effective 5%. The importer or broker has to declare that; it is not automatic.
