About the Toyota HiAce
The H100 Hiace (1989-2004) established the current cab-over Hiace architecture: rear-wheel drive, flat-front layout, and a range of diesel and gasoline powertrains across Van, Wagon, and Commuter body styles. JDM H100 diesel variants include the 2L-TE (2.0L intercooled), 3L (2.8L naturally-aspirated), and 5L (2.8L naturally-aspirated); gasoline variants use the 1RZ and 2RZ four-cylinders. Super GL is the premium trim used as the base for camper conversions; Grand Cabin seats 10 to 14 passengers in the highest-roof Wagon configuration.
The H200 Hiace (2004 onward) retained the cab-over layout and rear-wheel drive while upgrading to the 1KD-FTV (3.0L D-4D four-cylinder diesel) and 2KD-FTV (2.5L diesel). Engines shared with the Land Cruiser Prado and HiLux. Wide-body H200 variants with a high-roof configuration are the most frequently imported specification for conversion use. The H200 is the JDM-market vehicle; export Hiace sold in Australia and Southeast Asia carries a similar but not identical specification and differs in wiring and trim.
H100 models from 1989 are US-eligible. H200 from 2004 enters eligibility from 2029 onward, placing the H200 outside current import windows. Right-hand drive throughout. The cab-over body provides more interior volume relative to exterior footprint than conventional van platforms, a factor driving import numbers among camper conversion builders in North America. Pre-purchase inspection should check diesel injection timing, glow plug condition, and floor-pan and frame-rail rust, which are common wear areas on high-mileage H100 examples.
