About the Mazda RX-7
The RX-7 was produced across three generations from 1978 to 2002, all using the Wankel rotary engine in configurations from naturally-aspirated through sequential twin-turbo. The FB3S (SA22C, 1978-1985) used the 12A twin-rotor naturally-aspirated; the FC3S (1985-1991) the 13B in single-turbo Turbo II or naturally-aspirated form; the FD3S (1991-2002) the 13B-REW sequential twin-turbo. Each generation increased power and mechanical sophistication while retaining the front-mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive balance.
The FD3S is the generation with the strongest collector profile. JDM trims include Type R (sport suspension), Type RS (Bilstein front dampers, optional six-speed manual), and RZ (convertible basis, lower production). The Spirit R, produced in 2002 as the final FD3S, is available in Type A (two-door coupe, six-speed manual, Brembo brakes, racing seats), Type B, and Type C (automatic). Spirit R Type A production is cited at approximately 1,500 units. FD3S peak JDM output is 255ps in standard documentation.
All three generations are US-eligible: FB3S from 2003, FC3S from 2010, and FD3S progressively from 2016 onward (2002 Spirit R clears by 2027). Right-hand drive. Rotary engine pre-purchase evaluation requires differential pressure testing; standard cylinder-bore compression gauges do not function correctly on Wankel engines. Apex seal condition, oil injection system function, and coolant header tank condition are the primary inspection points on FD3S imports. Rebuild intervals are measured in apex seal wear rather than simple mileage.
