Smart buyer checklist

Treat this as two groups. Required items protect you from payment loss and fraud — if a seller resists any of them, walk away. Ideal items help you assess the car's condition; when one is missing, factor it into your risk and your offer rather than treating it as automatic fraud.

Requiredfraud and payment-loss prevention

  • Confirm title status. Clean, salvage, rebuilt, or no title — and the title's jurisdiction — should be clear before you wire.
  • Confirm the car is importable to your location. That's your homework, not the seller's; if the import path is unclear, step back and verify before paying.
  • Read the bill of sale before you wire. "As-is" with no warranty is normal; anything that removes inspection or payment protections is a red flag.
  • Use a third-party escrow service; never wire to a personal account. For dealer sales, a wire to the business account named on the invoice is normal; for private-party sales, use escrow.

Idealvehicle-condition diligence; factor missing items into risk and price

  • Ask for the export certificate. If the car was exported from Japan recently, the deregistration document can help confirm provenance and timing. If unavailable: certificates for older imports are often filed away, so absence is a risk signal, not automatic fraud.
  • Ask for underbody, engine bay, and rear-quarter photos. Those areas reveal rust and repair work that hero shots can hide.If unavailable: the car may still be in transit or storage; review existing media and ask for fresh shots once it's accessible.
  • Consider a third-party pre-purchase inspection (PPI). A specialist inspection can catch issues that change the price. If unavailable: a PPI is often not feasible while the car is still overseas, so price the added uncertainty instead of treating it as proof of fraud.

We inspect each one ourselves, address what needs to be addressed, and put real kilometers on it after service to confirm everything works. This Crown Athlete is one of the cleanest examples we have handled, and we treated the service to match that standard. Here is…

No smoking history. Shaken passed June 2025. This car was driven and verified by our team before being listed for sale. Some cars you look at and immediately know they were taken care of. This Crown Athlete is one of them. Every panel is straight, every chrome detail is intact, the interior looks like it has never seen a hard day. One of the cleanest examples we have had in stock. The color is Atlantis Blue Mica, code 8L4. Toyota used this shade primarily on the Land Cruiser and Lexus LS400 of this era. Finding it on a Crown Athlete is genuinely unusual. Crown Athletes of this generation were sold overwhelmingly in white, silver, and black. We have moved a number of Crowns through our inventory and this is the only one in this color we have seen. It shifts differently in different light and no photo captures it accurately. It is a color you have to see in person. The Athlete is the sport-focused Crown. Rear-wheel drive, 1JZ-GE inline-six, automatic transmission with manual mode, and original staggered BBS wheels. The 1JZ-GE is one of Toyota’s most respected engines, known for smooth power delivery, long service life, and the kind of refinement you expect from a flagship Japanese sedan. If you want to see how Toyota marketed this car in Japan when it was new, here is the original 1990s Japanese advertisement. We did not just prep this car and list it. We drove it. A full round trip from Holiday, FL to North Carolina and back. The car handled the highway without a complaint, the A/C kept up in Florida heat, and everything worked exactly as it should for the entire trip. After we got back, we put fresh brakes on it and changed the oil. That is the condition it is in now. The interior is original throughout, floor mats included, no modifications, no wear worth mentioning. The MultiVision display works. The swing climate control works. Every switch, every function, every detail operates exactly as it should. This car passed Japan’s shaken inspection in June 2025, which means it was recently certified under one of the strictest vehicle roadworthiness programs in the world. At 59,850 miles it was a straightforward pass. Price: $15,000. Mileage: 62,680mi Fuel economy: approximately 21 MPG city / 28 MPG highway / 24 MPG combined based on 1JZ-GE real-world data. Interesting Facts The Crown Athlete was Toyota’s sport-oriented Crown trim, sitting alongside the Royal Saloon in the lineup. Where the Royal Saloon was built for passengers, the Athlete was built for the driver. Lower suspension, sport-tuned steering, and a more aggressive stance were standard. The 1JZ-GE is a 2.5L naturally aspirated inline-six that Toyota used across multiple platforms including the Crown, Chaser, and Cresta. It is regarded as one of the smoothest and most reliable inline-six engines Toyota ever produced. BBS wheels are a German-engineered wheel brand used in Formula 1 and endurance racing. Finding them as original factory equipment on a Japanese domestic sedan reflects the level of specification the Athlete trim was aimed at. The MultiVision display in the Crown was one of the earliest in-car touchscreen navigation systems in a production sedan. Units from this era frequently fail due to aging capacitors. On this car it is fully functional. The Toyota Crown has never been officially exported to the United States. This example qualifies for legal import under the federal 25-year exemption rule. Long before opening our location in the United States, our team was importing and servicing these vehicles in Europe when many of them were still new. Because of that experience, we know these platforms extremely well. Every model has its own weak points, and we inspect and address them before the vehicle is offered for sale. All vehicles are serviced at our facility in Japan before shipping. Fluids, belts, filters, batteries, and common failure points are inspected and replaced when necessary. Unlike many dealerships, we actually drive our vehicles. They don’t sit in a parking lot. Our trucks and cars are used regularly so we can verify reliability before they reach their new owner. When you buy from us, you’re getting a vehicle that is fully prepared and ready to drive from day one. JP-TRADE is our first location in the United States, supported by a team of more than 40 people across Europe, Japan, Korea, China, and the U.S. If you made it this far, here is a little bonus for you. Why did Toyota make a sport version of a car that was already considered a luxury sedan? The Crown in Japan occupies a very specific cultural position. It has been the car of executives, government officials, and senior management since 1955. By the late 1990s Toyota understood that a new generation of buyers wanted the Crown’s reputation and build quality but with a more driver-oriented character. The Athlete was the answer. Lower, sharper, fitted with sport seats and better wheels, it was aimed at buyers who wanted to drive the Crown rather than be driven in it. In Japan it was a subtle but meaningful distinction. Outside Japan, almost nobody knew it existed. Now it is here, and it is exactly what it was always meant to be.

Asking-price context

JDMBUYSELL comparison data for this Toyota Crown; the basis line states the exact pool used.

Figures are shown in your selected display currency, and fall back to USD when live rates are unavailable. Active asking-price pools use current active listings, not verified sale prices or an appraisal. For sold pools: sale price when reported; otherwise, the listing’s last asking price. Samples of fewer than 5 comparable listings are not shown. Lighter shading means fewer examples, not higher precision. Source: JDMBUYSELL listing data.
