The injectors are the most maintenance-sensitive component on this engine. Carbon deposits accumulate on the injector tips over time, causing rough idle, hesitation, and reduced fuel economy. We serviced the injectors before listing. It is the step most sellers skip, and it is the most important one on a D-4 engine of this age. Mileage: 58,780 miles (94,577 km). Interesting Facts The 2JZ-FSE D-4 direct injection system injects fuel at high pressure directly into the combustion chamber rather than the intake port. This design improves thermal efficiency but allows carbon deposits to accumulate on the back of the intake valves over time, since fuel wash no longer cleans them as it does in port-injected engines. Servicing the injectors and keeping the intake clean is the defining maintenance requirement of this engine family. TEMS, Toyota Electronic Modulated Suspension, adjusts damping firmness in real time using sensors and an ECU. It allows the Royal Saloon G to ride softly on smooth roads while automatically firming up on rough surfaces, without any driver input required. The two-way instrument cluster on this Crown can display speed and engine information in traditional analog gauge format, fully digital format, or a combination of both. The ability to switch between display modes was an unusual feature in a production sedan in 2000 and reflected Toyota’s interest in offering buyers customization within the cabin environment. The Crown Royal Saloon G served as Toyota’s internal proving ground for luxury technology before it entered the Lexus LS lineup. Equipment that appeared in Lexus models was often validated here first, making the G trim a more technically significant vehicle than its relatively low profile in the US market would suggest. Why do direct injection engines like the 2JZ-FSE need injector service when port injection engines do not? In a conventional port-injected engine, fuel is sprayed into the intake port before the valve. Some of that fuel coats the back of the intake valve and washes away any carbon deposits that form from oil vapors and combustion gases. It is an accidental cleaning cycle that happens every time the engine runs. In a direct injection engine, fuel goes straight into the cylinder and never touches the back of the intake valve. The natural cleaning effect disappears. Carbon builds up on the valve stems and seats over time, restricting airflow and causing rough idle, hesitation at low RPM, and reduced efficiency. The solution is periodic injector service and intake cleaning, neither of which the engine does for itself. It is the price of the efficiency gains that direct injection provides, and it is why servicing the injectors on a D-4 engine before selling it is not optional, it is the maintenance item that determines how the engine actually runs.
