Smart buyer checklist

Treat this as two groups. Required items protect you from payment loss and fraud — if a seller resists any of them, walk away. Ideal items help you assess the car's condition; when one is missing, factor it into your risk and your offer rather than treating it as automatic fraud.

Requiredfraud and payment-loss prevention

  • Confirm title status. Clean, salvage, rebuilt, or no title — and the title's jurisdiction — should be clear before you wire.
  • Confirm the car is importable to your location. That's your homework, not the seller's; if the import path is unclear, step back and verify before paying.
  • Read the bill of sale before you wire. "As-is" with no warranty is normal; anything that removes inspection or payment protections is a red flag.
  • Use a third-party escrow service; never wire to a personal account. For dealer sales, a wire to the business account named on the invoice is normal; for private-party sales, use escrow.

Idealvehicle-condition diligence; factor missing items into risk and price

  • Ask for the export certificate. If the car was exported from Japan recently, the deregistration document can help confirm provenance and timing. If unavailable: certificates for older imports are often filed away, so absence is a risk signal, not automatic fraud.
  • Ask for underbody, engine bay, and rear-quarter photos. Those areas reveal rust and repair work that hero shots can hide.If unavailable: the car may still be in transit or storage; review existing media and ask for fresh shots once it's accessible.
  • Consider a third-party pre-purchase inspection (PPI). A specialist inspection can catch issues that change the price. If unavailable: a PPI is often not feasible while the car is still overseas, so price the added uncertainty instead of treating it as proof of fraud.

We inspect each one ourselves, address what needs to be addressed, and put real kilometers on it after service to confirm everything works. exactly what to do about it. Here is what was done on this one specifically: Front axle bearings replaced, a known wear item on every Space Gear Front brakes replaced Radiator replaced with new, the original plastic-tank radiators crack with age, this one is gone New 4WD switch installed, these fail on every Delica eventually, this one will not be your problem Speed sensor replaced, a known weak point on this platform Electric step motor fully serviced, this is one of the most overlooked failure points on the Space Gear. When the motor is neglected it burns out and the entire step assembly needs replacing. We serviced it properly. It operates like new. Injection pump seal inspected and confirmed good, the single most cited mechanical failure on the 4M40 Two new batteries installed, upgraded to larger capacity units New tires mounted New coolant New brake fluid Fresh engine oil and filters CarPlay installed with new speakers Turbo timer installed No rust under the car. After all service was completed, we put nearly 33,000 km on this van ourselves. No issues. Not a single one. This van is completely ready. Three rows, 4WD, a diesel engine, and the ability to fold everything flat into a sleeping platform. This one is the wide body Space Gear with twin sunroofs, and it is properly sorted. The engine is the 4M40 2.8L intercooled turbo diesel. Same engine, 4WD system, and suspension hardware as the second-generation Pajero. Super Select 4WD gives you 2H, 4H, 4HLc, and 4LLc. The bolt pattern is 6×139.7, identical to the Pajero, so wheels cross over directly. The 4M40 is chain-driven, no timing belt to worry about, ever. This van is fitted with a turbo timer. On a turbocharged diesel that has been working hard, shutting the engine off immediately traps heat in the turbocharger with no oil flow to cool it. Over time that damages the turbo bearings and shortens its life significantly. The turbo timer keeps the engine running for a set period after you switch off the ignition, allowing oil to continue circulating and the turbo to cool down properly before everything stops. It is the kind of detail that tells you this van was owned and maintained by someone who understood it. The twin sunroofs are factory configuration. The front panel tilts and slides, the rear panel slides. Both have been inspected and confirmed leak-free. We want to be direct about one thing: we put nearly 33,000 km on this van after it arrived. That is not a small number. We drove it, loaded it, and used it the way an owner would. The oil was changed properly at the right intervals throughout. Nothing broke. Nothing needed attention. A van that covers 33,000 km without a single issue is a van you can trust. The build is clean. Push bar front and rear. PIAA fog lights. Clear headlights with LED upgrade. Wide body fenders designed to accommodate larger tires. Pajero wheels. Black wood interior trim. CarPlay with upgraded speakers already installed. Grey interior. Rear A/C. Privacy glass. All three rows fold completely flat into a full sleeping platform without any modification required. One important note for buyers: state registration varies across the US. Most states register Delicas without issue, but Maine and Michigan have created obstacles for this platform. Verify with your state DMV before purchasing. We are happy to assist. Mileage: 138,169 miles (222,363 km). Fuel economy: approximately 17 20 MPG in mixed driving. Highway cruise at 60-65 mph typically returns 20 22 MPG. The 20-gallon tank gives a realistic highway range of 350 400 miles. Interesting Facts The 4M40 uses a timing chain, not a timing belt. There is no scheduled timing belt replacement on this engine, ever. That is one less catastrophic failure mode to think about. The electric step motor on the Space Gear is a known failure point that most importers ignore. When the motor seizes from lack of service, the entire step assembly burns out. On this van it has been fully serviced and operates like new. The Delica Space Gear shares its 4M40 engine, Super Select 4WD transfer case, double-wishbone front suspension, and 6×139.7 bolt pattern with the second-generation Mitsubishi Pajero. The two vehicles share drivetrain hardware but not body structure. The Pajero is body-on-frame. The Space Gear is unibody. The Mitsubishi Delica was never officially sold in the United States. Federal import under the 25-year exemption is straightforward. State registration is possible in most states, but verify with your DMV before purchasing, as Maine and Michigan have classified certain Delica models as off-road-only vehicles. Long before opening our location in the United States, our team was importing and servicing these vehicles in Europe when many of them were still new. Because of that experience, we know these platforms extremely well. Every model has its own weak points, and we inspect and address them before the vehicle is offered for sale. All vehicles are serviced at our facility in Japan before shipping. Fluids, belts, filters, batteries, and common failure points are inspected and replaced when necessary. Unlike many dealerships, we actually drive our vehicles. They don’t sit in a parking lot. Our trucks and cars are used regularly so we can verify reliability before they reach their new owner. When you buy from us, you’re getting a vehicle that is fully prepared and ready to drive from day one. JP-TRADE is our first location in the United States, supported by a team of more than 40 people across Europe, Japan, Korea, China, and the U.S. If you made it this far, here is a little bonus for you. Why does the Delica have such a cult following in the US when almost nobody has heard of it? The Mitsubishi Delica has been imported into the US in meaningful numbers for only a few years, ever since the oldest examples crossed the 25-year threshold. In that short time it has developed one of the most passionate followings of any JDM import. The reason is simple: it does something no American vehicle does. It is a three-row family van with genuine 4WD, a diesel engine, and a flat floor that turns into a bed. Minivans in America are built for school runs. The Delica was built for mountain passes. Americans who discover it tend to wonder why nothing like it was ever sold here. The answer is that it was never needed here, until people saw one and realized they had been missing it their whole lives.
