Interesting Facts The 4M40 turbo diesel is chain-driven, not belt-driven. There is no timing belt replacement interval on this engine. Why did the US get the Montero instead of the Pajero? When Mitsubishi brought their flagship 4WD to the United States in 1983, they needed a new name. In Spanish-speaking markets, “pajero” is a vulgar slang term for a certain private activity that most people prefer to keep to themselves. With a large Spanish-speaking population in the US, putting that word on a billboard was not an option Mitsubishi was willing to consider. So they renamed it Montero, which translates to “mountain hunter” in Spanish. The truck stayed exactly the same. The name changed, the diesel engine did not come along, and most American buyers never knew what they were missing.
