Quick answer

The H100 is the fourth-generation Toyota HiAce, released in Japan on 24 August 1989; its successor went on sale on 23 August 2004. Wagon, Van and Commuter models used different engines by date, with a 1KZ-TE turbo diesel Custom Wagon catalogued from August 1993. Confirm the build month from the car's papers.

Background

Overview

The H100 is the fourth-generation Toyota HiAce, released in Japan on 24 August 1989. By July 1999 Toyota listed Wagon, Van and 15-seat Commuter bodies, with petrol and diesel engines that depended on body and date. Toyota gives release dates, not production months, so the build month comes from the car's own papers.

Match the plate, engine and body to a dated Toyota record before you pay. Toyota's catalogue lists a 1KZ-TE Custom Wagon from August 1993, and the July 1999 Limited came with either a 2RZ-E petrol or the 1KZ-TE diesel, so an engine that does not fit the grade and date needs an explanation.

Dated changes: 4WD became full-time in August 1993, the 1KZ-TE gained an intercooler in July 1999, and a 1TR-FE petrol reached the Van and Commuter on 22 July 2003.

Confirm the complete code on the vehicle's frame or VIN plate; drivetrain, body, and market variants can use different prefixes within one generation family.

Key Takeaways

  • Released in Japan on 24 August 1989. Toyota's record gives a release date, not a production start or end month.
  • Engines depend on body and date: 1RZ-E, 2RZ-E, 2L-T and 3L at launch, a 1KZ-TE Custom Wagon from August 1993, 1TR-FE from July 2003.
  • The 1KZ-TE stays at 130 PS but gained a water-cooled intercooler in July 1999, lifting torque from 29.5 to 33.8 kgf-m.
  • 4WD became full-time in August 1993, with no centre-differential lock or auxiliary transmission.
  • The Super Custom Limited was not diesel-only: the July 1999 matrix lists a 2RZ-E petrol as well as the 1KZ-TE diesel.
  • Regius Ace, released in July 1999, was essentially the HiAce Van renamed.

Background

Bodies, grades and codes

Toyota lists the model codes RZH101G, RZH100G, RZH110G, LH100G, LH110G and LH107G for the generation, and later Wagon examples carry KZH codes. The July 1999 Wagon grades were Deluxe (ten seats), Super Custom (eight, semi-middle roof), Super Custom G (eight, triple moonroof) and Super Custom Limited (seven, triple moonroof), with Grand Cabin G-p and G-e as ten-seat, high-roof, super-long models. The Van grades were DX, GL Package and Super GL, and the Commuter was the 15-seat DX. Living Saloon EX, also July 1999, was a special specification based on the Super Custom G. Regius Ace, released the same month through Toyota Vista dealers, was essentially the HiAce Van renamed.

Engines by date

At launch Toyota offered newly developed 2-litre 1RZ-E and 1RZ petrols and a 2.4-litre 2RZ-E. Its representative Super Custom Limited ratings, all net, were 110 PS for the 1RZ-E, 120 PS for the 2RZ-E and 94 PS for the 2.4-litre 2L-T turbo diesel. The 3.0-litre 1KZ-TE reached the Custom Wagon in August 1993 at 130 PS and 29.5 kgf-m (289.3 Nm).

A water-cooled intercooler in July 1999 raised torque to 33.8 kgf-m (331.5 Nm) at the same 130 PS. The July 1999 Van matrix lists a 3.0-litre 5L diesel on the GL Package, and the 22 July 2003 update added a 2.0-litre 1TR-FE petrol. The sources used give no rating for the 3L, 5L or 1TR-FE.

Four-wheel drive

Toyota's history says launch 4WD models used only the 2.8-litre 3L diesel. In August 1993 it replaced the part-time system, built around a transfer case, with a full-time system that has no centre-differential lock and no auxiliary transmission. Toyota's July 1999 catalogue lists a Super Custom G (KH-KZH106W) as full-time 4WD with the electronic four-speed automatic and an optional LSD, at 2,090 kg. That is the only late 4WD Wagon documented here, so other 4WD bodies and grades may differ.

Wagon size, running gear and equipment

The August 1993 Custom (Y-KZH100G) seated nine and measured 4,640 x 1,690 x 1,950 mm on a 2,330 mm wheelbase at 1,850 kg, with a five-speed floor shift. Toyota lists power-assisted rack and pinion steering, double-wishbone torsion-bar front suspension, a coil-sprung trailing-link rear axle, ventilated front discs, rear drums, a 70-litre diesel tank and dual air conditioning. The August 1996 Deluxe Long (E-RZH111G) seated ten at 4,900 mm on a 2,590 mm wheelbase and 1,710 kg, with driver and passenger airbags and ABS as standard. The July 1999 update lengthened the front body section by 50 mm, added second-row captain seats to the Limited and gave its steering wheel a woodgrain-effect rim.

Van and Commuter updates, 2002 and 2003

On 7 August 2002 Toyota improved the Van and the Regius Ace Van: 5L diesel models gained an engine undercover and sound-absorbing material to meet exterior-noise rules, and the Super GL gained a wireless door-lock remote with answer-back. On 22 July 2003 the Van and Commuter received a newly developed 2.0-litre 1TR-FE petrol with DOHC 16 valves and VVT-i. The fifth-generation HiAce followed on 23 August 2004.

Importing an H100

The US 25-year rule runs from each car's date of manufacture (49 CFR 591.5(i)), so use the build month, not the model year or the 1989 release date. EPA's over-21-years provision expects an engine of the same model and configuration as the original, and its 2011 overview also mentions equivalent or newer EPA-certified engines, so ask EPA about any swap. State registration rules are separate and are not covered here. Canada counts 15 years from the month and year of manufacture, treats buses under a separate rule (manufactured before 1 January 1971), and some provinces will not license right-hand-drive vehicles. Establish whether a Commuter is classed as a bus before relying on 15 years.

Should You Buy a Toyota HiAce H100?

Strengths come from Toyota's catalogues and press releases. The cautions come from Toyota's 4WD history and one owner thread.

Why You'll Love It

  • Dated factory records Toyota's catalogues and press releases date the Wagon, Van and Commuter grades, so a car can be matched to its grade and year.
  • A documented turbo diesel The 1KZ-TE is rated 130 PS, with 289.3 Nm in 1993 and 331.5 Nm after the July 1999 intercooler update.
  • Airbags and ABS on a 1996 Wagon Toyota's August 1996 catalogue lists driver and passenger airbags and ABS as standard on the Deluxe Long.
  • Conventional Wagon running gear Toyota lists rack and pinion power steering, a coil-sprung rear axle and ventilated front discs on the 1993 Custom.

Why You Might Not

  • No production months Toyota's records give release and catalogue dates, so the build month has to come from the car and its export papers.
  • Overheating reports on the 1KZ-TE One owner forum reports severe overheating on a 1998 camper. It is a single report and gives no failure rate.
  • No low range on later 4WD Since August 1993 Toyota's full-time 4WD has no centre-differential lock or auxiliary transmission.
  • Gaps in the engine record The sources used give no ratings for the 3L, the 5L or the 1TR-FE, so check each car's own papers.

Who Should NOT Buy This

  • Anyone who wants a low-range transfer case on a post-August 1993 4WD: Toyota's full-time system has none.
  • Anyone buying on the word diesel alone: the H100 used the 2L-T, 3L, 5L and 1KZ-TE diesels, with different dates and bodies.
  • Anyone planning to rely on Canada's 15-year rule for a Commuter: buses fall under a separate rule.
  • Anyone planning a US import with a swapped engine: EPA expects the original-design engine or a certified replacement.

Common Issues & Solutions

The only item here is an owner report, not a Toyota document.

Issue Cause Solution
1KZ-TE overheating An owner of a Japan-origin 1998 KZH128 camper reports severe overheating on a long drive. A second thread discusses the viscous fan and radiator cleaning. Have a specialist check the radiator, viscous fan operation, leaks and signs of combustion gas in the coolant before you buy. The reports give no failure rate.

Differences between JDM & USDM

This page covers the Japanese-market H100 and uses Toyota's Japanese records, with power in PS and torque in kgf-m and Nm. Export-market HiAce specifications need separate evidence, and none is stated here.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist

The Buyer's Read

Start with the plate. An H100 can be a Wagon, a Van or a Commuter, and Toyota's records tie engines to body and date: a 1KZ-TE Custom Wagon is catalogued from August 1993, and the July 1999 Limited came with a 2RZ-E petrol or the 1KZ-TE diesel.

Then decide what you need from the drivetrain. Toyota's 4WD changed to a full-time system in August 1993 with no centre-differential lock and no auxiliary transmission, so a later 4WD car has no low range to test.

On a 1KZ-TE, have a specialist check the cooling system. Owner reports of overheating exist, though they give no failure rate. The 1999 intercooler raised torque; power stayed at 130 PS.

Last, work out age from the build month. Toyota gives release dates only, so the plate and export papers decide US and Canadian eligibility, and a 15-seat Commuter needs its class established for Canada.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the H100 code cover?
It is the fourth-generation HiAce. Toyota's heritage record dates it from 24 August 1989 and lists model codes including RZH100G, RZH101G and LH100G, and later 1KZ-TE Wagons carry KZH codes. The fifth-generation HiAce went on sale on 23 August 2004. The records used here give no production start or end months.
Which engines did the H100 use?
Launch petrols were the 1RZ-E, 1RZ and 2RZ-E, with the 2L-T turbo diesel and, on 4WD, the 3L diesel. The 1KZ-TE reached the Custom Wagon in August 1993, a 5L diesel appears on the July 1999 GL Package Van, and a 1TR-FE petrol arrived on 22 July 2003. The engine depends on body and date.
Does an H100 4WD have low range?
Not after August 1993. Toyota says the full-time system it introduced then has no centre-differential lock and no auxiliary transmission. Launch 4WD cars used a part-time system built around a transfer case; the records used here do not describe its gearing.
Is a Regius Ace the same as a Super Custom?
No. Toyota calls the Regius Ace essentially the HiAce Van renamed, released on 5 July 1999 through Toyota Vista dealers. Super Custom is a Wagon grade.
Did the 1KZ-TE get more powerful in 1999?
No. Toyota's catalogues list 130 PS before and after. The July 1999 water-cooled intercooler raised torque from 29.5 to 33.8 kgf-m (289.3 to 331.5 Nm).
Does the 1KZ-TE overheat?
One owner thread reports severe overheating on a 1998 camper, and another discusses the viscous fan and radiator cleaning. Those reports give no failure rate, so have a specialist check the cooling system before you buy.
Can I import an H100 to the US or Canada?
The US 25-year rule runs from each car's manufacture date, and EPA separately expects the original-design engine or a certified replacement. Canada counts 15 years from the manufacture month, treats buses separately, and some provinces will not license right-hand-drive vehicles.
