Quick answer
In Japan the Supra line runs from the A60 (sold as the Celica XX from July 1981) through the A70 (February 1986) and the A80 (May 1993) to the A90 (May 2019, production ended March 2026). The A80 SZ and SZ-R have the 225 PS 2JZ-GE. The RZ, GZ and RZ-S have the 280 PS twin-turbo 2JZ-GTE.
Background
The Japanese A60 launched with the 1,988 cc 1G-EU (125 PS) and the 2,759 cc 5M-GEU (170 PS), both inline-sixes. The A70 launched with the 2,954 cc 7M-GTEU turbo at 230 PS, and Toyota announced the 2,491 cc 1JZ-GTE at 280 PS on 9 August 1990. The A80 uses the 2,997 cc 2JZ-GE (225 PS) or the sequential twin-turbo 2JZ-GTE (280 PS).
The A90 launched in Japan with the 2.0-litre B48 in the SZ (197 PS) and SZ-R (258 PS) and the 3.0-litre B58 in the RZ (340 PS). Toyota announced a 387 PS RZ in April 2020 and a six-speed manual in April 2022 for autumn 2022. Toyota Japan says production ended in March 2026.

Chassis history
The Supra in Japan runs from the A60 Celica XX (1981) and the A70 (1986) to the A80 (1993) and the A90 GR Supra (2019). Each generation has its own page with grades, engines and dates.
Identification
Generation names are broad families. The factory chassis codes below identify the variants represented in JDMBUYSELL's current Toyota Supra guide data.
Confirm the complete code on the vehicle's frame or VIN plate; drivetrain, body, and market variants can use different prefixes within one generation family.
Buyer's call
Each generation page has its own full list of strengths and weaknesses.
Market
This hub follows Toyota Japan's specifications. For the A80 those are 225 PS for the 2JZ-GE and 280 PS for the 2JZ-GTE. Airbags were optional at the Japanese launch in 1993 and standard on all cars from April 1996. For the A90, Japan's RZ was rated 340 PS at launch, and Toyota announced 387 PS in April 2020. MotorWeek reports that the US six-cylinder rose from 335 to 382 hp for model year 2021, so US figures should not be matched to Japanese grades.

Editorial
Choose the generation first, then the grade and gearbox. On the A80, the SZ and SZ-R are naturally aspirated and the RZ, GZ and RZ-S are twin turbo. In the late Japanese catalogues the RZ and SZ-R come only with the six-speed manual, the RZ-S with the six-speed or a four-speed automatic, and the SZ with the five-speed or a four-speed automatic.
The A70 changed by revision: the 2.0-litre twin turbo was rated 185 PS at launch and 210 PS from August 1990. The A60 and A90 pages cover their own grades. For a US import, check the build date on the data plate and confirm EPA and customs requirements separately.
