Quick answer

The Toyota Mark II is a Japanese-market sedan and hardtop. This hub covers the X80 (launched August 1988), X90 (October 1992) and X100 (September 1996). The Tourer V carried a 280 PS 1JZ-GTE, twin turbo in the X90 and single turbo in the X100. Open the generation page for your car's codes and dates.

Background

Overview

The Toyota Mark II was a Japanese-market sedan and hardtop. Toyota numbers the X80 as the sixth generation (24 August 1988), the X90 as the seventh (29 October 1992) and the X100 as the eighth (5 September 1996). The next generation went on sale on 24 October 2000.

Tourer V in the X90 and X100

The X90 Tourer V (October 1992 catalogue) lists a twin-turbo 1JZ-GTE at 280 PS and 37.0 kgf·m. It came with a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic.

The X100 Tourer V (September 1996 catalogue) lists a single-turbo 1JZ-GTE at 280 PS and 38.5 kgf·m. Toyota's heritage page says the eighth generation replaced the previous twin-turbo engine with a single turbo.

Which generation page to open

Open the X80 page for the 1988 to 1995 hardtop and sedan, the X90 page for the 1992 to 1996 hardtop, and the X100 page for the 1996 to 2000 hardtop. The Mark II Qualis wagon launched on 23 April 1997 on the front-wheel-drive Camry Gracia platform.

Identification

Chassis-code reference

Generation names are broad families. The factory chassis codes below identify the variants represented in JDMBUYSELL's current Toyota Mark II guide data.

X80 (GX81, MX83, JZX81; Aug 1988 – Dec 1995, hardtop to Oct 1992)
Chassis codes: GX81, JZX81, SX80, LX80, and MX83
X90 (JZX90; Oct 1992 – Sep 1996 catalogue period)
Chassis codes: JZX90, GX90, JZX91, JZX93, SX90, and LX90
X100 (JZX100; Sep 1996 – Oct 2000)
Chassis codes: JZX100, GX100, JZX105, JZX101, GX105, and LX100

Market

Differences between JDM & USDM

This hub describes the Japanese-market Mark II only. Outputs are Toyota's Japanese PS and kW ratings, and dates are Japanese release and catalogue dates. US federal safety rules allow import of a vehicle that is 25 or more years old, judged from the individual car's manufacture date (49 CFR 591.5(i)). For EPA's over-21-year exemption, the engine must be the original-design engine or an EPA-certified replacement. Canada works out vehicle age from the month and year of manufacture.

The figures come from Toyota's catalogues and heritage pages, in PS as Toyota prints them. The generation pages show the output per grade.

Editorial

The buyer's read

Start with the generation page for the car in front of you. Then match the chassis code and the engine code on the plate to a Toyota catalogue grade.

One code can cover several engines. E-JZX90 is used on both the 180 PS 2.5 Grande G and the 280 PS Tourer V, so the code alone does not show whether a car is turbocharged. The X90 Tourer V is twin turbo, and Toyota's records describe the X100 Tourer V as single turbo.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which Mark II generations does this hub cover?
The X80 (launched 24 August 1988), the X90 (29 October 1992) and the X100 (5 September 1996). The next generation went on sale on 24 October 2000.
Is the Tourer V twin turbo or single turbo?
The X90 Tourer V lists a twin-turbo 1JZ-GTE at 280 PS. Toyota's heritage page says the X100 replaced the twin turbo with a single turbo at the same 280 PS.
Does the chassis code show whether a Mark II is turbocharged?
Not always. E-JZX90 covers both the 180 PS 2.5 Grande G and the 280 PS Tourer V, and JZX81 covers both the 1JZ-GE and the 1JZ-GTE. Check the engine code too.
Is the Mark II Qualis an X100?
No. The Qualis is a wagon that launched on 23 April 1997 on the front-wheel-drive Camry Gracia platform.
