Quick answer
This guide covers Japan's first four Forester generations: SF from February 1997, SG from February 2002, SH from December 2007 and SJ from November 2012. The turbo and STI cars include the SF Type M, the SG9 STi Version (265 PS), the SH S-EDITION and tS, and the SJG 2.0XT (280 PS). Chassis codes alone do not give the engine.
Background
The Subaru Forester went on sale in Japan in February 1997. This guide covers its first four Japanese generations: SF from 1997, SG from 2002, SH from 2007 and SJ from 2012. Their STI versions include SF Type M, SG9 STi Version and the SH and SJ tS; each generation page covers grades, codes, recalls and import rules.

Chassis history
Dates are Subaru's Japanese launch or catalogue dates. Each generation page has its own specification tables, recalls and checklist.
Identification
Generation names are broad families. The factory chassis codes below identify the variants represented in JDMBUYSELL's current Subaru Forester guide data.
Confirm the complete code on the vehicle's frame or VIN plate; drivetrain, body, and market variants can use different prefixes within one generation family.
Market
This guide describes the Japanese-market Forester and uses Subaru's Japanese ratings in PS and kW. UK press says the Forester STI was only sold in the Japanese Domestic Market. Car and Driver's US model-year 2004 2.5XT (210 hp) and Subaru's US model-year 2014 2.0XT (250 hp) are separate specifications from the Japanese 220 PS XT and the Japanese 280 PS 2.0XT. Subaru's chronology lists US introduction in July 1997 and European introduction in September 1997.

Editorial
Pick the generation first. The SF is the 1997 to 2002 car, with the turbo S/tb, the 2.5-litre T/25 and the S/tb-STi, STi II and Type M. The SG adds the Cross Sports and the SG9 STi Version. The SH moved its naturally aspirated cars from the EJ20 to the FB20 in October 2010 and added the S-EDITION and tS. The SJ is the FB20 SJ5 and the 280 PS FA20 SJG.
Then read the full grade and chassis number, because SF5 and SG5 each cover naturally aspirated and turbo cars. Check the recalls listed on the generation page by chassis number, and match equipment to the grade and date. Finally, judge age from the build date, and check EPA's engine rule if you plan to import to the US.
