Quick answer

The RX-8 (SE3P) is Mazda's four-door, four-seat rotary coupe with a naturally aspirated 13B-MSP RENESIS. Japanese launch ratings were 250 PS for the Type S 6MT and 210 PS for the other grades; Mazda's March 2008 sheet lists 235 and 215 PS. Production began in February 2003 and ended in June 2012.

Background

Overview

The Mazda RX-8 was built in one generation, the SE3P: a four-door, four-seat coupe with a naturally aspirated 13B-MSP RENESIS rotary engine. Mazda began Japanese-market production on 17 February 2003, facelifted the car on 10 March 2008 and ended production in June 2012. The generation guide covers grades, power ratings by date, compression tests, the fuel-pump recall and import rules.

Quick read

Key takeaways

  • Production began 17 February 2003 and ended in June 2012. The Japanese facelift went on sale on 10 March 2008, not in 2009.
  • Launch ratings: 250 PS on the Type S 6MT, 210 PS on other grades. Mazda's March 2008 sheet lists 235 PS or 215 PS.
  • At launch a manual gearbox did not mean high power: the base RX-8 5MT was rated 210 PS.
  • October 2006 automatics moved to six speeds and a six-port engine, replacing the four-speed and four-port engine.
  • Type RS is a 2008 grade. SPIRIT R, on sale 24 November 2011, was built on Type RS (6MT) and Type E (6EC-AT).
  • Mazda's reproduced export workshop figures give 830 kPa standard and 680 kPa minimum for a warm engine at 250 rpm. Keep oil-level records.

Constants

Common across all RX-8 generations

  • The Japanese gasoline grades use a naturally aspirated RENESIS 13B-MSP twin-rotor Wankel engine.
  • Front-midship engine placement, rear-wheel-drive layout
  • Four-seat body with rear-hinged 'freestyle' half-doors and no B-pillar

Chassis history

Generation timeline

Dates distinguish production, announcements and sales. Mazda records June 2012 as the month production ended.

Identification

Chassis-code reference

Generation names are broad families. The factory chassis codes below identify the variants represented in JDMBUYSELL's current Mazda RX-8 guide data.

SE3P (RENESIS 13B-MSP; 2003–2012)
Chassis code: SE3P

Confirm the complete code on the vehicle's frame or VIN plate; drivetrain, body, and market variants can use different prefixes within one generation family.

Buyer's call

Should you buy a Mazda RX-8?

Why you'll love it

  • A dated grade ladder Mazda's Japanese releases date each grade from the 2003 launch to the 2011 final lineup, so a car can be identified by grade and month.
  • High-revving manual cars Mazda rated the Type S 6MT at 250 PS at 8,500 rpm at launch, and the Type S and Type RS at 235 PS at 8,200 rpm in March 2008.
  • Four seats and a deep boot Mazda's launch release describes centre-pillarless freestyle doors for front and rear seats and a 290-litre (VDA) boot.
  • Factory sport equipment Type RS added Recaro bucket seats, Bilstein dampers and 19-inch forged wheels as Mazda equipment from March 2008.

Why you might not

  • Oil use by design Mazda's Japanese manual says the RENESIS consumes a small amount of engine oil, so regular dipstick checks are part of ownership.
  • Compression decides condition Mazda's reproduced export workshop procedure calls for replacement or overhaul when compression is at or below 680 kPa at 250 rpm, or chamber differences exceed 150 kPa or rotor differences exceed 100 kPa.
  • Output depends on grade and date Launch cars were rated 210 or 250 PS and March 2008 cars 215 or 235 PS, so a listing needs the grade and build date.
  • A fuel-pump recall Mazda Japan recall 5013 covers some 2008–2012 cars, so the chassis number needs checking.

Market

Differences between JDM & USDM

This guide covers Japanese-market cars. Mazda's US 2009 release lists Sport, Touring, Grand Touring and R3 grades, with 232 horsepower on the six-speed manual and 212 horsepower on the six-speed automatic. US ratings and model-year terms do not replace Japanese PS ratings and sale dates, and R3 is an export grade name.

The buyer's read

Start with the chassis plate, then the grade and the date. The Japanese gasoline grades under the SE3P code were rated 210, 215, 235 or 250 PS, so output follows the grade and month. Ask for a warm compression test (Mazda's reproduced export workshop figures) and oil-level records, check recall 5013 by chassis number, and work out import age from the manufacture date. The SE3P guide has the detail.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is a Japanese RX-8 rated 250 PS or 235 PS?
Mazda's April 2003 release rates the Type S 6MT at 250 PS at 8,500 rpm. Its March 2008 specification sheet lists net 235 PS at 8,200 rpm for the Type S and Type RS.
Was the Japanese facelift in 2008 or 2009?

When can a Japanese RX-8 be imported?
The US safety exemption applies to a vehicle 25 or more years old, counted from its manufacture date, and EPA's engine rule applies separately. Canada's exemption is 15 years, counted by build month. Check state and provincial registration rules separately.
