Smart buyer checklist

Treat this as two groups. Required items protect you from payment loss and fraud — if a seller resists any of them, walk away. Ideal items help you assess the car's condition; when one is missing, factor it into your risk and your offer rather than treating it as automatic fraud.

Requiredfraud and payment-loss prevention

  • Confirm title status. Clean, salvage, rebuilt, or no title — and the title's jurisdiction — should be clear before you wire.
  • Confirm the car is importable to your location. That's your homework, not the seller's; if the import path is unclear, step back and verify before paying.
  • Read the bill of sale before you wire. "As-is" with no warranty is normal; anything that removes inspection or payment protections is a red flag.
  • Use a third-party escrow service; never wire to a personal account. For dealer sales, a wire to the business account named on the invoice is normal; for private-party sales, use escrow.

Idealvehicle-condition diligence; factor missing items into risk and price

  • Ask for the export certificate. If the car was exported from Japan recently, the deregistration document can help confirm provenance and timing. If unavailable: certificates for older imports are often filed away, so absence is a risk signal, not automatic fraud.
  • Ask for underbody, engine bay, and rear-quarter photos. Those areas reveal rust and repair work that hero shots can hide.If unavailable: the car may still be in transit or storage; review existing media and ask for fresh shots once it's accessible.
  • Consider a third-party pre-purchase inspection (PPI). A specialist inspection can catch issues that change the price. If unavailable: a PPI is often not feasible while the car is still overseas, so price the added uncertainty instead of treating it as proof of fraud.

batteries Full interior deep clean Full exterior polish On this Delica specifically: New fuel injectors installed New fuel filter New cabin air filter New valve cover gasket Oil changed twice, including after our North Carolina road trip Electric side step motor fully serviced, a known failure point on this platform CarPlay installed All-terrain tires mounted on Advan GT Style wheels No rust anywhere on the van. No oil consumption noted during or after our road trip. This van was driven extensively and verified before being listed for sale. The Chamonix is the top trim in the Delica Space Gear lineup. Most people know the standard Space Gear. The Chamonix is something different. It came from the factory with dual batteries, a 120A alternator, and a cold-weather equipment package that tells you exactly what kind of buyer Mitsubishi had in mind. This is a PE8W, which means 4M40 turbo diesel, high roof, and 4WD. The intercooler scoop on the hood is factory. The dual row of OEM fog lights is factory. The side marker antenna is factory. None of this was added after the fact. The Chamonix Mont Blanc is the rarer specification within the Chamonix range. Finding one in this condition does not happen regularly. We drove this van to North Carolina and back before listing it. This is something we do on every vehicle we are confident in, because a highway trip reveals things a shop inspection cannot. The Delica handled the drive without complaint. No oil consumption was noted throughout. After the trip, we changed the oil again before listing. The electric side steps were fully serviced. This is a known failure point on the Space Gear that most people leave it alone until the motor burns out. We addressed it properly. The interior is grey with leather seats. The front seats have built-in armrests, which is not standard across all Delica configurations. The second row swivels 360 degrees, a factory feature. The van is also fitted with a factory thermometer, voltmeter, and pitch and roll gauge, options that were not standard on all Space Gears. Factory heated windshield wipers. Front and rear A/C, both blowing cold. Driver and passenger airbags. Liftgate ladder. Backup mirror. Full tool set in the trunk. There is some wear on the driver seat. We will discuss this with the buyer before delivery. Mileage: 84,660 miles (136,212 km). Fuel economy: approximately 17 22 MPG in mixed driving based on real-world 4M40 automatic data. Highway cruise at 60-65 mph typically returns 20 22 MPG. Interesting Facts The PE8W chassis code confirms the high-roof 4WD 4M40 diesel configuration. The related PD8W is the low-roof version of the same mechanical package. High-roof examples command a premium because of the additional headroom and the rarity of finding one in good condition. The electric side step on the Space Gear is one of the most frequently neglected items on imported Delicas. The motor is exposed to road debris and moisture, and when it fails the entire assembly needs replacing. Servicing it properly before that happens is one of the differences between a van that works and one that creates problems. The pitch and roll gauge fitted to this van is a factory option that was available on higher-spec Space Gear configurations. It measures the van’s tilt angle in real time, useful for anyone using the van in uneven terrain or camping on sloped ground. The Mitsubishi Delica was never officially sold in the United States. State-level registration is possible in most states, but buyers in Maine and Michigan should verify with their DMV before purchasing. Federal import under the 25-year exemption rule is straightforward. Long before opening our location in the United States, our team was importing and servicing these vehicles in Europe when many of them were still new. Because of that experience, we know these platforms extremely well. Every model has its own weak points, and we inspect and address them before the vehicle is offered for sale. All vehicles are serviced at our facility in Japan before shipping. Fluids, belts, filters, batteries, and common failure points are inspected and replaced when necessary. Unlike many dealerships, we actually drive our vehicles. They don’t sit in a parking lot. Our trucks and cars are used regularly so we can verify reliability before they reach their new owner. When you buy from us, you’re getting a vehicle that is fully prepared and ready to drive from day one. JP-TRADE is our first location in the United States, supported by a team of more than 40 people across Europe, Japan, Korea, China, and the U.S. If you made it this far, here is a little bonus for you. Why is it called Chamonix? Chamonix is a town in the French Alps, at the base of Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Western Europe. It is one of the most famous ski and mountaineering destinations in the world. When Mitsubishi named their top-spec cold-weather Delica after it, they were not being subtle about the intended buyer. This was a van for people who drove into the mountains, not past them. The dual batteries, the 120A alternator, the waterproof carpets, and the rear limited slip differential were all part of the same idea: a vehicle that works where most vans stop. The name is on the badge. The engineering is under the hood.
