Background

Overview

The fourth-generation Delica (L400) Space Gear arrived in 1994 with the most aerodynamic styling the model line had ever received and the largest mechanical leap in its history. Truck variants were dropped entirely; instead, Mitsubishi focused on passenger and camper use, introducing bigger gasoline and diesel engines including the 2.8L 4M40 turbodiesel and the 3.0L 6G72 V6, shared with the second-generation Pajero. The 4WD system was the more capable Super Select setup also shared with the Pajero — 2H, 4H, 4HLc, and 4LLc modes with on-the-fly engagement at speeds up to roughly 100 km/h. JDM trims were XR, Exceed, Super Exceed, Chamonix, Jasper, and Active World, available in both short-wheelbase and long-wheelbase bodies and with the Aero Roof high-roof option on most.

Export markets dropped the Delica nameplate and badged the model as the L400 for cargo and Mitsubishi Space Gear for passenger versions. Australia retained both cargo and passenger trims with four available grades. South Korea took the L400 and rebadged it as the Hyundai Starex, which ran in parallel from 1997 to 2007. Under the US 25-year rule, the L400 became federally legal beginning 2019 (1994 build year forward); 1995–2000 builds are now eligible and represent the bulk of current US imports.

The primary mechanical risk is 4M40 cooling — overheating cracks heads on this engine — followed by injection-pump wear, turbo health, and balance-shaft belt service. The Crystal Lite Roof option is more common on L400 Exceed and Super Exceed than on the L300, and the same drain and seal inspection applies. Pajero parts crossover is the L400 owner's quiet advantage in the salvage yard.
