Quick answer

Toyota built three MR2 generations: the W10 (AW10 and AW11, on sale in Japan from 8 June 1984), the W20 (SW20, from 17 October 1989) and the W30 (ZZW30, sold in Japan as the MR-S from 12 October 1999). Engine choices included the supercharged 4A-GZE, turbocharged 3S-GTE and naturally aspirated 1ZZ-FE. Dates are Japanese sale dates.

Background

Overview

Toyota built three generations of the MR2 for Japan, starting with the W10 (AW10 and AW11) on 8 June 1984. The W20 (SW20) followed on 17 October 1989 with 2.0-litre engines, and the W30 (ZZW30) went on sale on 12 October 1999 as the MR-S roadster. Dates are Japanese sale dates; the generation pages cover grades, inspection points and import detail.

Quick read

Key takeaways

  • Three generations, three route codes: W10 covers the AW10 and AW11, W20 the SW20 and W30 the ZZW30.
  • The supercharged 4A-GZE (145 PS net) arrived on 26 August 1986. The SW20's 3S-GTE is the factory turbo, 225 then 245 PS from October 1993.
  • The W30 is the MR-S in Japan, a soft-top roadster rather than a T-bar car. Overseas markets kept the MR2 name.
  • Rev 1 to Rev 5 are enthusiast labels for SW20 build periods. Toyota's Japanese catalogue uses release months and grade names.
  • Dates on these pages are Japanese sale dates, not build dates. US eligibility is judged per car from its build date.

Chassis history

Generation timeline

Dates are Toyota's Japanese release dates. Each generation page has its own specification tables and checklist.

W10

First generation — W10 (AW10/AW11; 1984–1989)

W20

Second generation — W20 (SW20; 1989–1999)

W30

Third generation — W30 (ZZW30, MR-S in Japan; 1999–2007)

Identification

Chassis-code reference

Generation names are broad families. The factory chassis codes below identify the variants represented in JDMBUYSELL's current Toyota MR2 guide data.

First generation — W10 (AW10/AW11; 1984–1989)
Chassis codes: AW10 and AW11
Second generation — W20 (SW20; 1989–1999)
Chassis code: SW20
Third generation — W30 (ZZW30, MR-S in Japan; 1999–2007)
Chassis code: ZZW30

Confirm the complete code on the vehicle's frame or VIN plate; drivetrain, body, and market variants can use different prefixes within one generation family.

Market

Differences between JDM & USDM

This guide follows Japanese-market cars and quotes Toyota's Japanese ratings in PS. Toyota's heritage page says the third generation was renamed MR-S for Japan while overseas markets kept the MR2 name. Export specifications, special editions and totals are comparisons only and appear on the generation pages with their market named.

The buyer's read

Pick the generation first. The W10 is the coupe sold from June 1984, with the AW10 and AW11 codes and a supercharged 4A-GZE from August 1986. The W20 is the SW20 from October 1989, with a 3S-GE or a turbocharged 3S-GTE, and Toyota's catalogue months are the reliable way to date one. The W30 is the MR-S roadster from October 1999.

Check the paperwork against the car. Dates on these pages are Japanese sale dates, so work out US import age from each car's build date, and check EPA's engine rule if the engine is not the original. Treat Rev labels, edition counts and production totals as secondary figures: the published totals are worldwide and the two first-generation totals disagree. Each generation page carries its own inspection list.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does MR2 stand for?
Toyota's 1984 release says MR2 stands for Mid-Ship Runabout 2-Seater. The Japanese name of the third generation, MR-S, is defined in Toyota's 1999 release as Midship Runabout-Sports.
Which MR2 is turbocharged?
The factory turbo is the 3S-GTE in the second-generation SW20 GT and GT-S: 225 PS at launch and 245 PS from October 1993. The first generation had a supercharged 4A-GZE at 145 PS net instead, and Toyota's heritage page lists a single 140 PS engine for the third generation.
Did Toyota use Rev 1 to Rev 5 for the SW20?
Not in its Japanese catalogue, which names releases by month and grade. The Rev labels are an enthusiast convention for build periods, and Toyota UK's magazine says the changes are usually identified by the period of build.
How many MR2s were built?
No all-generation total was found. Published worldwide totals are 163,845 (Autoweek) or 166,104 (Hagerty) for the first generation and 130,732 (Classic & Sports Car) for the second. No worldwide third-generation total was found.
