About the Toyota Land Cruiser
The Toyota Land Cruiser has been in continuous production since 1951, spanning the J60 (1980-1990), J70 (1984-present), J80 (1990-1997), J100 (1998-2007), and J200 (2007-2021) generations most relevant to the import market today. All post-J50 generations use a body-on-frame construction with full-time or part-time 4WD; the J80 and J100 adopted coil-spring suspension and added comfort equipment while retaining the solid rear axle. The J100 introduced independent front suspension on the standard wagon (J105 retained solid axles for heavy-duty markets) and was the first generation to offer a V8 engine. The J200 added ten airbags, multi-terrain ABS, and a twin-turbocharged V8 as standard. The Land Cruiser Prado is a distinct and lighter-duty sibling that branched from the J70 platform; this page covers the main Land Cruiser line.
The J60 generation offered the 2F 4.2L I6 petrol and 2H/12H-T diesel options. The J80 introduced the 1FZ-FE 4.5L DOHC I6 (FZJ80), the naturally-aspirated 1HZ 4.2L diesel I6 (HZJ80), and the 1HD-T/1HD-FT 4.2L turbo-diesel I6 (HDJ80); drivetrain was full-time 4WD with coil springs on all four corners. The J100 switched the flagship variant to the 2UZ-FE 4.7L V8 petrol (UZJ100) while retaining the turbocharged diesel line with the 1HD-FTE (HDJ100), an intercooled evolution of the 1HD-FT. The J200 used the 1VD-FTV 4.5L V8 twin-turbo diesel (VDJ200) in markets outside North America, and the 3UR-FE 5.7L V8 petrol (URJ200) in the US. Body styles across generations include four-door wagon, troop carrier, and pickup; the J70 line additionally encompasses short- and medium-wheelbase variants. All these specifications are right-hand drive in JDM production.
J60 models (1980-1990) are US-eligible under the 25-year rule, with the earliest FJ60 examples having cleared by 2005. J80 models (1990-1997) are fully eligible, having cleared from 2015 to 2022. J100 models (1998-2007) begin clearing from 2023, with the full production run eligible by 2032. J200 models from 2007 onward do not enter eligibility until 2032 at the earliest. All JDM generations are right-hand drive. Pre-purchase inspection on diesel examples should cover injection pump condition and timing on the 1HD-T/1HD-FT/1HD-FTE, glow plug function, and turbocharger condition on boosted variants; the grounding files document turbo housing cracks from carbon buildup as a documented failure mode on older turbodiesel examples. Frame rust is cited as a primary concern across all generations: frame rails, rear crossmember, body mount cups, and control arm mounts warrant close inspection, particularly on examples with commercial-use or high-mileage histories. AHC (Active Height Control) hydraulic suspension, fitted to late J80 and J100 VX/VX-Limited trims, has documented accumulator and pump failure patterns; condition assessment of this system should be part of any inspection on equipped examples.
