Smart buyer checklist

Treat this as two groups. Required items protect you from payment loss and fraud — if a seller resists any of them, walk away. Ideal items help you assess the car's condition; when one is missing, factor it into your risk and your offer rather than treating it as automatic fraud.

Requiredfraud and payment-loss prevention

  • Confirm title status. Clean, salvage, rebuilt, or no title — and the title's jurisdiction — should be clear before you wire.
  • Confirm the car is importable to your location. That's your homework, not the seller's; if the import path is unclear, step back and verify before paying.
  • Read the bill of sale before you wire. "As-is" with no warranty is normal; anything that removes inspection or payment protections is a red flag.
  • Use a third-party escrow service; never wire to a personal account. For dealer sales, a wire to the business account named on the invoice is normal; for private-party sales, use escrow.

Idealvehicle-condition diligence; factor missing items into risk and price

  • Ask for the export certificate. If the car was exported from Japan recently, the deregistration document can help confirm provenance and timing. If unavailable: certificates for older imports are often filed away, so absence is a risk signal, not automatic fraud.
  • Ask for underbody, engine bay, and rear-quarter photos. Those areas reveal rust and repair work that hero shots can hide.If unavailable: the car may still be in transit or storage; review existing media and ask for fresh shots once it's accessible.
  • Consider a third-party pre-purchase inspection (PPI). A specialist inspection can catch issues that change the price. If unavailable: a PPI is often not feasible while the car is still overseas, so price the added uncertainty instead of treating it as proof of fraud.

Interesting Facts The Daihatsu Hijet has been Japan’s best-selling kei truck for most of its 60-plus year production run. The S200 generation introduced in 1998 was the most significant update the platform had received since kei regulations expanded in 1990, bringing a new cab design, improved safety packaging, and the EFI DLI ignition system that replaced the older carbureted setup. The EF-SE engine in this truck uses distributorless ignition, eliminating the distributor cap and rotor as wear items. This was a meaningful improvement over the carbureted predecessors, which required more frequent ignition maintenance and were prone to starting issues in humidity and heat. 4WD on the Hijet S200 generation uses a part-time system with a manually operated transfer case. The hi/lo selector gives the truck a crawl ratio low enough to move at idle speed without slipping the clutch, which is the specification that makes these trucks genuinely useful on steep or soft terrain rather than just technically 4WD. Kei trucks with body damage are common on the import market because they were work vehicles in Japan, used daily in conditions where cosmetic damage accumulated. A dented kei truck with a maintained drivetrain is often a better purchase than a cosmetically perfect example with an unknown mechanical history. About Us We’ve been working with Japanese vehicles for over 25 years. Long before opening our location in the United States, our team was importing and servicing these vehicles in Europe when many of them were still new. Because of that experience, we know these platforms extremely well. Every model has its own weak points, and we inspect and address them before the vehicle is offered for sale. All vehicles are serviced at our facility in Japan before shipping. Fluids, belts, filters, batteries, and common failure points are inspected and replaced when necessary. Unlike many dealerships, we actually drive our vehicles. They don’t sit in a parking lot. Our trucks and cars are used regularly so we can verify reliability before they reach their new owner. When you buy from us, you’re getting a vehicle that is fully prepared and ready to drive from day one. JP-TRADE is our first location in the United States, supported by a team of more than 40 people across Europe, Japan, Korea, China, and the U.S. If you made it this far, here is a little bonus for you. Why do the most useful kei trucks often have dents? A kei truck without a scratch on it spent its life in a garage. A kei truck with dents worked. Japanese farmers and tradespeople used these trucks the same way Americans use their work pickups, loading them, driving them into tight spaces, and not worrying about the paint when the job needed doing. The trucks that come back from Japan in perfect cosmetic condition are usually the ones that sat, were stored, or were lightly used. The ones with dents and honest wear are often the ones with the better mechanical histories. This truck was used. The drivetrain reflects that in the best way possible.

Asking-price context

JDMBUYSELL comparison data for this Daihatsu Hijet; the basis line states the exact pool used.

Figures are shown in your selected display currency, and fall back to USD when live rates are unavailable. Active asking-price pools use current active listings, not verified sale prices or an appraisal. For sold pools: sale price when reported; otherwise, the listing’s last asking price. Samples of fewer than 5 comparable listings are not shown. Lighter shading means fewer examples, not higher precision. Source: JDMBUYSELL listing data.
