Daihatsu Motor Co. was established in 1907 and has been a Toyota subsidiary since 1998. Most of the line is kei-class. The Copen (L880K, LA400K) is a kei convertible with retractable hardtop. The Hijet S-series kei truck and van and the Terios J100/J102 compact SUV cover the work-and-utility end. Engines are predominantly under 700cc to clear kei regulations (EF, JB-series, JC-series, KF), except the Terios's 1.3L K3-VE. North American import demand is heaviest on the Hijet, which trades as a small farm and utility vehicle once it clears the 25-year exemption.
