Smart buyer checklist

Treat this as two groups. Required items protect you from payment loss and fraud — if a seller resists any of them, walk away. Ideal items help you assess the car's condition; when one is missing, factor it into your risk and your offer rather than treating it as automatic fraud.

Required fraud and payment-loss prevention

  • Confirm title status. Clean, salvage, rebuilt, or no title — and the title's jurisdiction — should be clear before you wire.
  • Confirm the car is importable to your location. That's your homework, not the seller's; if the import path is unclear, step back and verify before paying.
  • Read the bill of sale before you wire. "As-is" with no warranty is normal; anything that removes inspection or payment protections is a red flag.
  • Use a third-party escrow service; never wire to a personal account. For dealer sales, a wire to the business account named on the invoice is normal; for private-party sales, use escrow.

Ideal vehicle-condition diligence; factor missing items into risk and price

  • Ask for the export certificate. If the car was exported from Japan recently, the deregistration document can help confirm provenance and timing. If unavailable: certificates for older imports are often filed away, so absence is a risk signal, not automatic fraud.
  • Ask for underbody, engine bay, and rear-quarter photos. Those areas reveal rust and repair work that hero shots can hide.If unavailable: the car may still be in transit or storage; review existing media and ask for fresh shots once it's accessible.
  • Consider a third-party pre-purchase inspection (PPI). A specialist inspection can catch issues that change the price. If unavailable: a PPI is often not feasible while the car is still overseas, so price the added uncertainty instead of treating it as proof of fraud.

We don’t charge dealer fees or add-ons. The Sprinter Carib was Toyota’s Japan-only compact wagon, and the BZ Touring, introduced with the April 1997 update, was its performance grade. Toyota gave it the 4A-GE Blacktop, the same 20-valve engine used in the AE111 Corolla Levin and Sprinter Trueno, which makes it one of the very few factory wagons ever built around a high-revving twin-cam like this. The Blacktop is a 1.6L with five valves per cylinder, individual throttle bodies and 11:1 compression. It makes 163 HP at 7,800 rpm and 119 lb-ft at 5,600 rpm. This car has the electronically controlled 4-speed automatic with a sport mode, driving the front wheels. Mechanical preparation was done at our prep station in Toyama, Japan, with fresh fluids, plugs, filters, belts and a new battery. We also repaired the A/C. On older Toyotas, age and vibration crack the solder joints on the climate control board and the A/C stops responding, so we resoldered the board. It blows cold now. The car runs on aftermarket wheels with street semi-slick tires that we installed for the look. It has never been raced or tracked. Inside are the BZ Touring sport seats in gray, original floor and cargo mats, a retractable cargo cover, roof-mounted fishing rod holders, front and rear dash cams, parking sensors, power folding mirrors and a good sound system. ABS and driver and passenger airbags are standard on this grade, and the spare tire has never been used. The car is in excellent condition, with no rust and the paint in good shape. Factory white, color code 040. Florida title. Interesting Facts The Sprinter was the twin of the Corolla, sold through a different Toyota dealer network, and the Carib was its wagon version. The BZ Touring was offered only with front-wheel drive. The 4WD Caribs used a different, milder engine. The fishing rod holders on the roof lining are a classic Japanese accessory for wagons, built for anglers who drove to the coast or the mountains on weekends. The Carib was replaced by the Corolla Fielder in 2002, and the Sprinter name disappeared along with it. About Us Our team has worked with Japanese vehicles for over 25 years, first in Europe and Japan, now at JP-TRADE in Holiday, Florida. Mechanical preparation is done by Japanese mechanics at our prep station in Toyama, and we drive our cars before they reach a new owner. See our full process. If you made it this far, here is a little bonus for you. The name Carib comes from the caribou, the North American reindeer. Toyota chose it to suggest a tough, go-anywhere wagon, which is why the first Caribs from the 1980s were all-wheel drive.
