Smart buyer checklist

Treat this as two groups. Required items protect you from payment loss and fraud — if a seller resists any of them, walk away. Ideal items help you assess the car's condition; when one is missing, factor it into your risk and your offer rather than treating it as automatic fraud.

Required fraud and payment-loss prevention

  • Confirm title status. Clean, salvage, rebuilt, or no title — and the title's jurisdiction — should be clear before you wire.
  • Confirm the car is importable to your location. That's your homework, not the seller's; if the import path is unclear, step back and verify before paying.
  • Read the bill of sale before you wire. "As-is" with no warranty is normal; anything that removes inspection or payment protections is a red flag.
  • Use a third-party escrow service; never wire to a personal account. For dealer sales, a wire to the business account named on the invoice is normal; for private-party sales, use escrow.

Ideal vehicle-condition diligence; factor missing items into risk and price

  • Ask for the export certificate. If the car was exported from Japan recently, the deregistration document can help confirm provenance and timing. If unavailable: certificates for older imports are often filed away, so absence is a risk signal, not automatic fraud.
  • Ask for underbody, engine bay, and rear-quarter photos. Those areas reveal rust and repair work that hero shots can hide.If unavailable: the car may still be in transit or storage; review existing media and ask for fresh shots once it's accessible.
  • Consider a third-party pre-purchase inspection (PPI). A specialist inspection can catch issues that change the price. If unavailable: a PPI is often not feasible while the car is still overseas, so price the added uncertainty instead of treating it as proof of fraud.

Price: $9,000 plus tax, title and registration. We don’t charge dealer fees or add-ons. The ST215 Caldina GT-T was Toyota’s turbocharged, all-wheel-drive answer to the Subaru Legacy GT wagon. It uses the 3S-GTE, the same turbo four-cylinder family found in the Celica GT-Four and MR2 Turbo, rated at 256 HP at 6,000 rpm and 239 lb-ft at 4,400 rpm from the factory. Power goes through full-time AWD and Toyota’s Super ECT 4-speed automatic. This car is priced as a project and sold as-is. It runs and drives well, the A/C works, and it has been serviced with a new battery and fresh coolant. The engine bay is clean with no leaks. It sits on new Lehrmeister wheels with new tires, and there’s a spare in the trunk. Here is what it needs. All four shocks are worn and should be replaced, and the suspension needs service, which makes it a good base for coilovers. The timing belt history is unknown, so we recommend replacing the timing belt and water pump. Inside, the driver’s seat is worn and should be reupholstered, the steering wheel is scuffed and cracked, and the head unit display has faded. The rest of the interior is fairly clean. The paint needs a polish, the rear bumper has chips, one roof rail end cap is missing, and there is some surface rust, nothing serious. White, factory color code 040, with a gray interior. Built December 1998. Florida title. Interesting Facts The GT-T used a top-mount intercooler fed by the scoop on the hood, the same layout as the Celica GT-Four. Its factory rating of 256 HP (260 PS) made it one of the most powerful wagons sold in Japan at the time. The 3S-GTE is one of the best-supported Toyota engines for tuning, with parts shared across the Celica GT-Four and MR2 Turbo. This generation of Caldina was sold only in Japan. Europe got the related Avensis wagon, but never with a turbo. About Us Our team has worked with Japanese vehicles for over 25 years, first in Europe and Japan, now at JP-TRADE in Holiday, Florida. Mechanical preparation is done by Japanese mechanics at our prep station in Toyama, and we drive our cars before they reach a new owner. See our full process. If you made it this far, here is a little bonus for you. The GT-T arrived at the height of Japan’s late-1990s wagon boom, when the Subaru Legacy Touring Wagon ruled the segment. Toyota built it as a direct shot at the Legacy, with more power from the factory.

Asking-price context

JDMBUYSELL comparison data for this Toyota Caldina; the basis line states the exact pool used.

Figures are shown in your selected display currency, and fall back to USD when live rates are unavailable. Active asking-price pools use current active listings, not verified sale prices or an appraisal. For sold pools: sale price when reported; otherwise, the listing’s last asking price. Samples of fewer than 5 comparable listings are not shown. The sold trend leaves out periods with fewer than 5 reported sales. Source: JDMBUYSELL listing data.
