Smart buyer checklist

Treat this as two groups. Required items protect you from payment loss and fraud — if a seller resists any of them, walk away. Ideal items help you assess the car's condition; when one is missing, factor it into your risk and your offer rather than treating it as automatic fraud.

Requiredfraud and payment-loss prevention

  • Confirm title status. Clean, salvage, rebuilt, or no title — and the title's jurisdiction — should be clear before you wire.
  • Confirm the car is importable to your location. That's your homework, not the seller's; if the import path is unclear, step back and verify before paying.
  • Read the bill of sale before you wire. "As-is" with no warranty is normal; anything that removes inspection or payment protections is a red flag.
  • Use a third-party escrow service; never wire to a personal account. For dealer sales, a wire to the business account named on the invoice is normal; for private-party sales, use escrow.

Idealvehicle-condition diligence; factor missing items into risk and price

  • Ask for the export certificate. If the car was exported from Japan recently, the deregistration document can help confirm provenance and timing. If unavailable: certificates for older imports are often filed away, so absence is a risk signal, not automatic fraud.
  • Ask for underbody, engine bay, and rear-quarter photos. Those areas reveal rust and repair work that hero shots can hide.If unavailable: the car may still be in transit or storage; review existing media and ask for fresh shots once it's accessible.
  • Consider a third-party pre-purchase inspection (PPI). A specialist inspection can catch issues that change the price. If unavailable: a PPI is often not feasible while the car is still overseas, so price the added uncertainty instead of treating it as proof of fraud.

This car was driven and verified by our team before being listed for sale. Most people buy this car because of the engine. That is not a joke. In Japan the 4AGE Blacktop is so sought after as a swap engine that people regularly buy entire running cars just to pull the motor out. The fact that this one is a complete, clean, Florida-titled Carina GT in perfect condition is almost secondary to what is under the hood. The 4AGE Blacktop 20v is the fifth and final generation of Toyota’s legendary 4A-GE engine, developed in collaboration with Yamaha. Five valves per cylinder, individual throttle bodies, a compression ratio of 11:1, and a 7,800 rpm redline. It produces 165hp naturally aspirated from 1.6 liters. Stock it revs like nothing else from this era. With a proper turbo setup, builders regularly reach 300 to 350 horsepower from this platform on a chassis that weighs almost nothing. That is why this engine has a cult following that has lasted 30 years and shows no signs of slowing down. The AT210 Carina GT is the only factory sedan Toyota ever fitted with the Blacktop 4AGE. It was never sold outside Japan. If you want this engine in a complete, registered, road-legal car rather than an engine on a stand, this is one of the very few ways to get one. This example is Florida titled and already registered. Driver and passenger airbags are both fitted, which was an optional extra on this platform. The interior is clean, non-smoking, and in perfect condition throughout. Weds Raviron Selzer wheels with new 195/50R16 tires. CarPlay already installed. Price: $12,500. Mileage: 66,834 km (41,530 miles). Fuel economy: approximately 28 32 MPG in mixed driving based on real-world 4AGE naturally aspirated data. Interesting Facts The 4AGE Blacktop is the fifth and final generation of the 4A-GE engine family, and by most accounts the most advanced. It was the first 4AGE to feature an 11:1 compression ratio, a lightened flywheel, improved intake and exhaust ports, and more aggressive camshaft profiles compared to the Silvertop that preceded it. The Yamaha-designed five-valve-per-cylinder head is shared with the Silvertop but was further refined for the Blacktop. The AT210 Carina GT is the only production sedan Toyota ever fitted with the Blacktop 4AGE from the factory. The engine was also used in the AE111 Corolla Levin and Sprinter Trueno coupes, but the Carina is the only four-door application. This makes complete Carina GTs far rarer in the wild than the engine itself. The 4AGE in any form is one of the most commonly swapped engines in Japanese motorsport history. The Blacktop specifically is popular because of its individual throttle bodies and high compression ratio, which respond exceptionally well to turbocharging. Properly built examples regularly produce 300 to 350 horsepower with the right setup. Toyota developed the 4AGE in partnership with Yamaha Motor Company, who designed the cylinder head. The relationship between Toyota and Yamaha on performance engines continued for decades and produced some of the most respected naturally aspirated engines in Japanese automotive history. The Toyota Carina was never officially sold in the United States. This example is Florida titled and qualifies for legal registration without the 25-year exemption process, as it has already been cleared through the federal import procedure. Long before opening our location in the United States, our team was importing and servicing these vehicles in Europe when many of them were still new. Because of that experience, we know these platforms extremely well. Every model has its own weak points, and we inspect and address them before the vehicle is offered for sale. All vehicles are serviced at our facility in Japan before shipping. Fluids, belts, filters, batteries, and common failure points are inspected and replaced when necessary. Unlike many dealerships, we actually drive our vehicles. They don’t sit in a parking lot. Our trucks and cars are used regularly so we can verify reliability before they reach their new owner. When you buy from us, you’re getting a vehicle that is fully prepared and ready to drive from day one. JP-TRADE is our first location in the United States, supported by a team of more than 40 people across Europe, Japan, Korea, China, and the U.S. If you made it this far, here is a little bonus for you. Why does a 30-year-old 1.6-liter engine still have a cult following? The 4AGE is not famous because it made a lot of power. It is famous because of how it made its power. At a time when most small engines were tuned for economy and low-rpm drivability, Toyota and Yamaha built an engine that came alive above 5,000 rpm and kept pulling all the way to 7,800. Five valves per cylinder, individual throttle bodies, and a scream at full chat that no modern turbocharged engine can replicate. People who have driven a built 4AGE rarely go back to anything else. The engine has been in continuous use in Japanese club racing, drifting, and time attack for over three decades. There are communities dedicated to nothing else. This Carina GT is what happens when Toyota put that engine in a car and sold it quietly to the Japanese domestic market while the rest of the world missed it entirely.
