Description

Reliable, capable, and efficient, this Surf does just about everything and does it well Back in the 80s and 90s most vehicle manufacturers were building true body on frame SUVS. While the trend has migrated towards soft riding sedan based crossovers, you can still find a few honest rigs out there. This 1994 Surf is a prime example of a truck built to last, with its nearly bulletproof diesel engine. Finished in a classic Red Mica (3K3) this SSR-X is set off by refinished factory wheels, OEM rainguards, a factory spare tire swingarm, and chrome door handles. Aside from a front bumper replacement

in Japan and a few light chips, dings, and scuffs, the body is in good shape and this five-seater is fresh off a recent service including a new timing belt and water pump. Boasting only 102k verified and documented miles on the clock, this terrific Toyota is barely broken in. Reliable, capable, and efficient, this Surf does just about everything and does it well. A Japanese Classic like this would be a wonderful daily driver, fun family hauler, or beachcombing bruiser. Cool and collectible with low verified mileage, this example is a darn good one. The interior is simple and ergonomic. The highlight has to be the optional Recaro seats and door cards. They lack any major rips, stains or tears, and add to the unashamedly 90’s aesthetic. The driver benefits from a tilt adjustable steering column with functional steering wheel mounted cruise control. Within arms reach is a simple to use climate control system with piping hot heat and working A/C. A new A/C compressor and belt were replaced to bolster the system too. If you prefer more natural ventilation, a power moonroof unfurls, as does the rear hatch glass, and the side windows are all electric. Below is a factory optional upgraded headunit, which works but could benefit from an upgrade. To make daily use more enjoyable, power windows and locks work like a charm. The headliner is in good shape as are the carpets, and aside from a few dash defects under the mat, it’s hard to nitpick this cabin as it was clearly cared for in Japan. Under the skin this truck is almost identical to our US 4Runners. Parts are readily available and can be had on the cheap. The 1KZ-TE under the bonnet sweetens the deal however, as this torque monster was never offered here stateside, and is fresh off an oil and filter service. Two new 12v batteries allow the 3.0L to churn to life quickly, and a new fuel filter is on hand to keep unwanted contaminants out of the engine. For added peace of mind, one of our trained techs has performed the most expensive preventive maintenance item. A timing belt and water pump service should keep this engine chugging on for another ten years and 90k miles. Fresh coolant was installed and we also installed a new thermostat, which we perform as standard procedure with this service. The 1K is linked to a stout automatic gearbox which feeds torque through a selectable transfercase. For the best acceleration and fuel economy 2WD is the ticket, but 4WD can be engaged on the fly if necessary. If a beach outing or trail trip is on the docket, a low range 4WD can be utilized as well. The platform is connected and the suspension feels predictable and sporty for a truck. New front lower ball joints were replaced while it was on the lift as were the front sway bar end links. We also replaced the inner and outer tie rods for good measure. The power steering is direct and on point and the brakes feel tight and tidy. Grip is handled by four new Falken tires that were mounted and balanced here at the dealership. They reduce road noise and will last for tens for thousands of miles to come, after our fresh alignment!
