OEM rainguards, accessorize things a bit, and the 167k miles on the clock are verified and documented, which indicate the mechanicals are barely broken in. Unable to pass state safety inspection, this Surf must be trailered off the lot, but it remains a unique Japanese Classic ready for a new chapter here stateside! The interior is a highlight of this Hilux, and was clearly well cared for in a prior life. The moon mist upholstery is in good shape, and the seats show no discernible damage apart from some mild bolster wear on the driver’s bucket. The same can be said for the dash, which has resisted any cracks, fading, or distortion. The center stack frames functional automatic climate control, where the A/C blows cold and heat is still hot. Adjacent to the HVAC, JVC audio works like a charm. Power windows, locks, and mirrors assist daily use and are all operable, in true Toyota fashion. The rear bench and hatch area are in good shape, and the remaining upholstery is free of major damage or defects. The headliner is tight and tidy, as are the carpets beneath. This large-displacement turbodiesel 4 banger cranks over with haste and settles into a smooth idle. We’ve taken care of an oil and filter service too, for good measure. This Surf has no issues zipping up to highway speeds, and the manual gearbox shifts smoothly with no hitches or grinds. The suspension is composed over rougher pavement, the power steering is light and easy to command, and the ABS brakes do a good job at slowing this rig down.
