Key Takeaways
- JB74W is not a kei car: Suzuki classes the Sierra as a small four-wheel-drive vehicle, launched on 5 July 2018 with the kei Jimny.
- The K15B is 1,460 cc: 102 PS at launch and 101 PS in Suzuki Japan's current publication, with 130 N·m.
- Weights are dated: 1,070 / 1,090 kg at launch and 1,100 / 1,110 kg on the current sheet.
- Japanese grades are JL and JC; Safety Support was standard on the JC and optional on the JL at launch.
- The five-door Jimny Nomade is JC74, a separate model introduced in 2025.
- A JB74W built in June 2018 reaches 25 years in June 2043 under the US age rule.
Background
Engine and torque
The K15B is a water-cooled naturally aspirated inline-four with DOHC sixteen valves and intake VVT. Displacement is 1,460 cc, although Suzuki's history page calls it a 1,500 cc engine, with a 74.0 mm bore, 84.9 mm stroke and 10.0:1 compression. Suzuki's launch sheet rates it at 75 kW (102 PS) at 6,000 rpm and 130 N·m (13.3 kgf·m) at 4,000 rpm, net.
Suzuki Japan's current publication gives 74 kW (101 PS) at 6,000 rpm with the same torque. We do not know the changeover date or reason. The current engine description names 0W-16 oil; use the individual car's manual for its service specification.
Gearing and four-wheel drive
Suzuki's launch release says the new ladder frame, front-engine rear-drive layout, part-time 4WD with reduction transfer and three-link rigid axles carry over to both the Jimny and the Sierra. The launch sheet lists coil springs on rigid axles front and rear, front discs, rear leading-trailing drums, and ABS with EBD. The manual uses 4.425 / 2.304 / 1.674 / 1.190 / 1.000, reverse 5.151, final drive 4.090, with a transfer of 1.000 high and 2.002 low. The automatic uses 2.875 / 1.568 / 1.000 / 0.696, reverse 2.300, final drive 4.300, with 1.320 high and 2.643 low. The transfer is chain-and-gear.
Size and weight
Suzuki lists 3,550 × 1,645 × 1,730 mm (length, width, height, roof antenna folded), a 2,250 mm wheelbase, tracks of 1,395 mm front and 1,405 mm rear, 210 mm minimum ground clearance and a 4.9 m turning radius. Tyres are 195/80R15 96S and the tank holds 40 litres. Launch weights were 1,070 kg (5MT) and 1,090 kg (4AT); the current standard weights are 1,100 kg and 1,110 kg. Do not apply the current figures to a 2018 car or a blanket "under 1,100 kg" claim to every Sierra.
Fuel economy
Suzuki's WLTC combined figures are laboratory certification values. The launch sheet gives 15.0 km/L for the manual and 13.6 km/L for the automatic. The release for the revision on sale from 4 November 2025 gives 15.4 km/L and 14.2 km/L.
Grades and equipment
Japanese grades are JL and JC. Do not replace them with export grade names. At launch Safety Support was standard on the JC and a manufacturer option on the JL.
The 15 October 2025 announcement (on sale 4 November 2025) adopted Dual Sensor Brake Support II and made lane-departure suppression standard; all-speed adaptive cruise following applies to automatics. Suzuki's current interior page says full automatic air conditioning is fitted to all vehicles. A nine-inch display audio with rear camera and Suzuki Connect unit is a manufacturer option on the JL and JC, and Suzuki Connect services need a subscription.
Recalls
Recall 4946 (14 May 2021) covers 30,679 JB74W cars, JB74W-100036 to 130721, built 1 June 2018 to 3 December 2020: repeated door opening can break the front-door harness wires, so both harnesses are replaced. Recall 5438 (26 January 2024) covers 8,510 JB74W cars, JB74W-102720 to 111240, built 10 November 2018 to 21 August 2019: the low-pressure fuel pump's resin impeller can swell and, at worst, stall the engine, so the pump is replaced. Suzuki warns that a chassis range can include unaffected cars, so check each chassis number.
Sierra, Nomade and sales plans
Suzuki's Japanese chronology lists the Jimny Nomade as JC74, introduced in 2025; the five-door car is not a JB74. Suzuki's July 2018 release set a domestic sales target of 1,200 Sierras a year, excluding exports. That is a plan, not a count, and no JB74 production total was located. The earliest build date documented in the recalls we read is 1 June 2018, not proof that production began that day.
Importing a JB74
For the US, the age rule asks whether a car is at least 25 years old, counted from that car's own date of manufacture (49 CFR 591.5(i)); the model year or launch date does not decide it. EPA's rule for vehicles over 21 years old expects the engine to be the same model and configuration as the original, so check any replacement engine. State registration rules are separate. Canada counts 15 years from the month and year of manufacture. A JB74W built on 1 June 2018, the earliest documented build, reaches 25 years in June 2043 and Canada's 15-year mark in June 2033 (our arithmetic); check the individual car.

Should You Buy a Suzuki Jimny JB74?
Why You'll Love It
- More torque than the kei Suzuki rates the K15B at 130 N·m, against 96 N·m for the kei Jimny.
- Wider track Suzuki lists tracks of 1,395 mm front and 1,405 mm rear, against 1,265 mm and 1,275 mm on the kei car.
- 210 mm clearance Suzuki's performance page names a 210 mm minimum ground clearance.
- Climate control on all current grades Suzuki's current interior page says full automatic air conditioning is fitted to all vehicles.
Why You Might Not
- Heavier than at launch Current standard weights are 1,100 kg and 1,110 kg, up from 1,070 kg and 1,090 kg.
- Power figure needs a date Suzuki's launch sheet gives 102 PS and its current publication gives 101 PS.
- Larger turning radius Suzuki lists 4.9 m, against 4.8 m for the kei Jimny.
- Connected audio costs extra The nine-inch display audio and Suzuki Connect unit are a manufacturer option, and the services need a subscription.
Who Should NOT Buy This
- Anyone who wants a kei car: the Sierra is a registered-class vehicle.
- Anyone expecting export-market grade names or equipment: Japanese grades are JL and JC.
- Anyone who wants a five-door car: the Nomade is JC74, a separate model.
- Anyone planning a US import before the car's own 25th anniversary: a June 2018 build reaches it in June 2043.
Common Issues & Solutions
Both items are Suzuki recalls with stated chassis ranges. No owner-reported failures are used.
| Issue | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Front-door harness (recall 4946) | Suzuki says the harness design was inappropriate, so repeated door opening can break wires and stop the side and curtain airbags and mirror indicators working. | Both front-door harnesses are replaced. The Sierra range is JB74W-100036 to 130721, built 1 June 2018 to 3 December 2020. |
| Low-pressure fuel pump (recall 5438) | The resin impeller can swell in fuel and contact the pump case, which at worst can stall the engine while driving. | The pump is replaced. The Sierra range is JB74W-102720 to 111240, built 10 November 2018 to 21 August 2019. |
Differences between JDM & USDM
This page describes the Japanese Jimny Sierra JB74W using Suzuki Japan's sheets, releases and recall notices, in PS, kW and N·m. Verify the original sales market before applying these specifications to a car abroad. For a Japanese-market car being imported, calculate age from its individual build date.

The Buyer's Read
Begin with the version. Suzuki's launch sheet gives 102 PS and 1,070 / 1,090 kg; its current publication gives 101 PS and 1,100 / 1,110 kg. Neither the changeover date nor the reason is established, so insist on a dated source for any figure a seller quotes.
Then check the chassis number. Recall 4946 covers 30,679 Sierras built from 1 June 2018 to 3 December 2020, and recall 5438 covers 8,510 built from 10 November 2018 to 21 August 2019. Suzuki warns that a range can include unaffected cars.
Keep the model straight: JL and JC are the Japanese grades, the three-door Sierra is JB74W, and the five-door Nomade is JC74. Work out import age from the build date, not the 5 July 2018 sale start.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the Jimny Sierra sold in Japan?
- Yes. Suzuki launched the Jimny Sierra (3BA-JB74W) in Japan on 5 July 2018 as a small four-wheel-drive vehicle, in grades JL and JC, with a domestic sales target of 1,200 a year excluding exports.
- Is the K15B exactly 1.5 litres?
- No. Suzuki lists 1,460 cc, with a 74.0 mm bore and 84.9 mm stroke, although its history page calls it a new 1,500 cc engine.
- Why do sources list both 101 PS and 102 PS?
- Suzuki's July 2018 launch sheet gives 75 kW (102 PS) and its current Japanese publication gives 74 kW (101 PS), both at 6,000 rpm. We could not establish the changeover date or the reason, so quote the figure with its date.
- How do the manual and automatic differ?
- The manual's first gear is 4.425 with a 4.090 final drive and a 1.000 / 2.002 transfer. The automatic's first gear is 2.875 with a 4.300 final drive and a 1.320 / 2.643 transfer. Both are part-time 4WD.
- Is a five-door Jimny a JB74?
- No. Suzuki's Japanese chronology lists the five-door Jimny Nomade as JC74, introduced in 2025. The JB74 is the three-door Sierra.
- What changed with the 2025 safety update?
- Suzuki announced it on 15 October 2025, on sale from 4 November 2025. It adopted Dual Sensor Brake Support II and made lane-departure suppression standard. All-speed following for adaptive cruise control applies to automatics. WLTC combined figures became 15.4 km/L (manual) and 14.2 km/L (automatic).
- When can a JB74 be imported to the US?
- The US age rule is 25 years from each car's date of manufacture, so use the build date on the plate or papers. A car built in June 2018 reaches 25 years in June 2043 (our arithmetic). EPA expects the original engine configuration, state rules differ, and Canada counts 15 years from the build month.
