Background
Codes, bodies and naming
Suzuki's January 1999 sheet lists the 2WD van as GD-DA52V and the 4WD van as GD-DB52V. The June 1999 Wagon sheet gives GF-DA52W and lists part-time 4WD beside 2WD, so DA52W is not a 2WD-only code. Suzuki's heritage page counts the 1999 Every as the tenth generation from the 1964 Suzulight Carry Van, with the commercial Every and the passenger Every Wagon sold side by side from 1999. The layout is semi-cab-over, with a short bonnet and the front wheels moved forward. The seven-seat Every Plus, a 1,300 cc Wagon launched on 17 June 1999 and 3,675 mm long, is a separate model and is not covered here.
Turbo or naturally aspirated, 2WD or 4WD
Every DA52 uses the 657 cc F6A. At the January 1999 launch, the naturally aspirated GA and PA engines were rated at 50 PS net at 6,000 rpm and 6.2 kgf·m at 3,500 rpm. Suzuki revised NA output characteristics in November 1999, when JOIN was listed, without restating the figures in that release. The intercooled turbo (JOIN Turbo, JOYPOP Turbo and JOYPOP Aero Turbo vans, and every launch Wagon) is rated 60 PS at 5,500 rpm and 8.5 kgf·m at 3,000 rpm.
On 25 November 1999 Suzuki raised turbo output to 64 horsepower, gave turbo automatics four speeds and made turbo 4WD full-time. GA, PA and JOIN keep part-time 4WD. Launch 4WD cars use Suzuki's Drive Select 4×4, which switches between 2WD and 4WD while driving.
Revisions by date
6 January 1999: vans on sale. 17 June 1999: Every Wagon. 25 November 1999: 64-horsepower turbo, four-speed turbo automatic, full-time turbo 4WD and a 156 mm rear-seat slide on every Wagon.
December 1999: a compressed natural gas Every was added. 17 May 2000: restyled turbo front end, knock sensor and boost-pressure control on turbo cars, a relocated intercooler, and dual airbags with ABS and front belt pretensioners across the range (a bundled option on GA and PA). 18 January 2001: the 21st Century Commemorative Special EX-II Wagon, a turbo with 5MT or 4AT and 2WD or 4WD, with aero bumpers, side under-spoilers and a four-speaker 2DIN audio unit.
Dimensions, mass and loads
Suzuki lists the launch van at 3,395 mm long and 1,475 mm wide on a 2,350 mm wheelbase. Heights are 1,765 mm (GA), 1,870 mm (PA, JOIN Turbo, JOYPOP Turbo) and 1,885 mm (JOYPOP Aero Turbo). Launch 2WD van weights are 800 kg (PA, 5MT), 820 kg (JOIN Turbo, 3AT) and 880 kg (JOYPOP Aero Turbo, 3AT). Rated payload depends on occupants: 350 kg with two and 250 kg with four on GA, PA and JOIN Turbo, and 200 kg and 100 kg on the JOYPOP vans.
The Wagon seats four, with its rear seat 90 mm further back than the van's. Its launch weights run from 860 kg (JOYPOP Turbo, 2WD, 5MT) to 950 kg (Aero Turbo, 4WD, 3AT).

Should You Buy a Suzuki Every DA52?
Both lists come from Suzuki's releases, specification sheets and recall notice.
Why You'll Love It
- Engine checked from the cab Suzuki moved the engine under the driver's seat so it can be inspected with cargo loaded, and put the daily-check reservoirs under the bonnet.
- Switchable 4WD at launch Suzuki's Drive Select 4×4, listed for the van and Wagon launch cars, changes between 2WD and 4WD while driving.
- Wagon airbags and ABS as standard The Every Wagon launched with driver and passenger SRS airbags and ABS fitted as standard.
- Dated manufacturer sheets Suzuki's digital library carries the January 1999 van and June 1999 Wagon specification sheets, so a car's grade, engine and drive can be matched.
Why You Might Not
- Safety equipment varies by van grade At launch the driver's airbag was a factory option on GA and PA vans. From 25 November 1999 dual airbags and ABS were standard on every other van, with GA and PA still optional.
- Turbo specification moved during 1999 Suzuki rated the launch turbo at 60 PS and the revised model sold from 25 November 1999 at 64 horsepower, when turbo automatics changed from three to four speeds. Confirm the specification from the grade and frame number.
- Modest output Suzuki rated the launch naturally aspirated engine at 50 PS and the launch turbo at 60 PS.
- Four seats in the Wagon The Every Wagon seats four. The seven-seat Every Plus is a separate, larger model.
Who Should NOT Buy This
- Anyone who needs seven seats: the Every Wagon seats four, and the seven-seat Every Plus is a different model.
- Anyone buying on the word turbo alone: a January 1999 turbo and a post-November 1999 turbo differ in output and automatic gearbox.
- Anyone unable to document EPA engine compliance for a US import: verify the original engine configuration or an equivalent or newer EPA-certified replacement engine and its emission controls.
Common Issues & Solutions
Suzuki's 30 August 2001 recall covers the accelerator-cable fault described below.
| Issue | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Accelerator inner cable (recall of 30 August 2001) | Suzuki found the pedal pin and cable-end clip fit could stop the cable turning smoothly, bending the inner cable and at worst breaking it. DA52V, DB52V and DA52W frames built 12 May 2000 to 18 January 2001 were listed. | Check the frame number against Suzuki's lookup and ask for proof the cable was replaced with the countermeasure part. |
Differences between JDM & USDM
This page describes the Japanese-market DA52 and quotes Suzuki's Japanese specification sheets and releases, in net PS and kgf·m. Export-market and converted vehicles are not covered, and nothing here is a statement about them. Suzuki offers a recall and campaign search by frame number for Japan-origin vehicles, which is the way to check an individual car.

Generation History
Generation span (Japan) (1999–2001)
- Tenth generation in Suzuki's count from the 1964 Suzulight Carry Van
- Build dates are not established; recall tables give only build-period boundaries

The Buyer's Read
Begin with the plate. DA52V is Suzuki's 2WD van, DB52V the 4WD van and DA52W the Every Wagon, and the full code tells you more than the badge. Then date the car. A January 1999 turbo makes 60 PS, while Suzuki's 25 November 1999 release raised turbo output to 64 horsepower, added a four-speed automatic on turbo cars and made turbo 4WD full-time. GA, PA and JOIN keep part-time 4WD.
Check equipment against the grade. Wagons came with dual airbags and ABS, while on vans they depend on the grade and the date, and turbo cars from the 17 May 2000 revision have a knock sensor and boost-pressure control.
Finally, check the accelerator-cable recall for frames built from 12 May 2000 to 18 January 2001, and work out import age from the build date on the plate, not the launch year.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What are DA52V, DB52V and DA52W?
- Suzuki's January 1999 sheet lists the 2WD van as GD-DA52V and the 4WD van as GD-DB52V. The Every Wagon is GF-DA52W, and its June 1999 sheet lists both 2WD and part-time 4WD.
- Is the DA52 turbo 60 PS or 64 PS?
- Both, by date. Suzuki's January 1999 sheet rates the turbo at 60 PS at 5,500 rpm. Its 25 November 1999 release raised turbo output to 64 horsepower.
- Does a 2000 Every have a three-speed or four-speed automatic?
- Turbo automatics have four speeds from 25 November 1999. Naturally aspirated GA, PA and JOIN vans keep the three-speed automatic in Suzuki's price tables for November 1999 and May 2000.
- Is the DA52W available with 4WD?
- Yes. Suzuki's June 1999 sheet lists part-time 4WD with the 5-speed manual and 3-speed automatic. From 25 November 1999 turbo 4WD is full-time.
- Which launch grades have airbags and ABS?
- Every Wagon had driver and passenger airbags and ABS as standard in June 1999. On vans at launch they were a factory option, a driver airbag alone on GA and PA, and airbags with ABS as a set on JOIN Turbo and JOYPOP.
- Can I import a DA52 to the US or Canada?
- The US 25-year rule runs from each car's manufacture date (49 CFR 591.5(i)). EPA's separate exemption requires at least 21 years since the production year and the original engine configuration; replacement engines must be equivalent or newer EPA-certified engines with their emission controls. Canada counts 15 years by manufacture month and year. Check state or provincial registration rules separately.
