About the Toyota Supra A80

The MA70/MA71 Supra (1986-1992) established the turbocharged identity that defined subsequent generations. The 7M-GTE 3.0L twin-cam produced 232ps in JDM specification; a late MA71 variant introduced the 1JZ-GTE in 2.5GT Twin Turbo trim at 280ps, previewing the JZA70 platform. The JZA70 (1990-1993) replaced the 7M-GTE entirely, offering the 1JZ-GTE or 2JZ-GTE in GT-Turbo configurations, the latter producing 280ps. The JZA70 body shares some panel dimensions with the MA70 but is a distinct platform.

The JZA80 Supra (1993-2002), the Mk IV, carries the 2JZ-GTE twin-turbo at 280ps in RZ and SZ-R JDM trims, or the 2JZ-GE naturally-aspirated at 220ps in SZ and SZ-R-NA variants. The six-speed Getrag V160 (naturally-aspirated, rated to approximately 600Nm) and V161 (twin-turbo, higher torque rating) gearboxes distinguish the two powertrain lines. The factory intercooler, fuel system, and sequential twin-turbocharger arrangement make the JZA80's 2JZ-GTE a widely tuned engine; factory output is conservative relative to the engine's documented mechanical limits.

MA70/MA71 variants are US-eligible. JZA70 from 1990 entered eligibility from 2015. JZA80 from 1993 became eligible from 2018; the full production run (through 2002) clears by 2027. The A90 Supra (2019+) uses BMW powertrain components and is US-legal from the factory. It is not a JDM import. Right-hand drive for JDM JZA70/JZA80 examples. Imported JZA80 RZ examples frequently carry aftermarket boost controllers, intercoolers, or fueling modifications from Japanese or Australian ownership; mechanical inspection is advisable before purchase.
