About the Subaru Impreza
The Subaru Impreza has been produced since 1992 across six generations spanning chassis codes GC/GF (1992-2000), GD/GG (2000-2007), GE/GH/GR/GV (2007-2014), GP/GJ (2011-2016), VA (2014-2021 for WRX/STI), and GT/GK/GU (2016-present). Within each generation, the lineup is divided into three tiers: base Impreza (naturally-aspirated EJ or FB engines, FWD or AWD depending on market and trim), WRX (turbocharged, AWD, sport suspension), and WRX STI (higher-output turbo, STI-specific drivetrain hardware). The WRX was exported to the US and other markets from the GD generation onward; the STI followed for USDM from 2004. The WRX and STI variants share chassis code families with the base Impreza through the GR/GV generation, after which the VA WRX and VA STI branched onto a separate platform while retaining the Impreza name. Rally competition — WRC campaigns from 1993 onward, with drivers including Colin McRae and Richard Burns — established the WRX STI's motorsport lineage and continues to inform the model's collector standing.
The turbocharged WRX and STI variants use a direct lineage of EJ-series flat-four engines. GC-generation WRX used the EJ20G (early) and EJ20K (later), both 2.0L turbocharged. GD-generation WRX used the EJ205 (2.0L); the JDM GD STI used the EJ207 (2.0L, with AVCS and twin-scroll variants depending on year), while the USDM GD STI received the EJ257 (2.5L). GR/GV-generation WRX moved to the EJ255 (2.5L turbo); GR/GV STI retained the EJ257. Factory output figures are approximately 227hp for the WRX (EJ205, JDM spec) and 300hp for the STI (EJ257), with the JDM EJ207 closely comparable. STI-specific hardware across generations includes the Driver-Controlled Centre Differential (DCCD) with manual and automatic modes, six-speed close-ratio gearbox (GD STI onward), Brembo four-piston front brakes, and stiffened suspension calibration. The Spec C trim within the GD and GR generations is a lightweight, track-oriented STI variant with reduced mass and, on some build years, an intercooler water spray system. Limited-production variants include the S203 and S204 (GD-era, STI-tuned with revised engine and suspension), and the GC-era 22B STi (widebody, EJ22G 2.2L turbo, DCCD, approximately 400 units produced). Base Impreza trims across these generations use naturally-aspirated EJ engines (EJ15, EJ16, EJ20 NA) and, from the GP/GJ generation onward, the FB-series (FB16, FB20).
Under the US 25-year FMVSS exemption, GC/GF-generation examples from 1992 entered eligibility from 2017; the full GC/GF run cleared by 2025. GD/GG examples from 2000 entered eligibility from 2025 onward. GR/GV examples from 2007 do not enter eligibility until 2032, placing most third-generation WRX and STI outside current import windows. All JDM Impreza variants are right-hand drive. Pre-purchase inspection on EJ-engined examples warrants particular attention to head gaskets — the OEM single-layer steel-and-graphite construction is a documented failure point on both turbocharged and naturally-aspirated EJ engines, with external leaks (coolant seep at the head-block junction) and internal failure (oil-coolant contamination) both possible, and replacement costs documented in the $1,800-$3,500 range for a proper multi-layer gasket repair. Ringland failure in EJ pistons is a separate concern on WRX and STI examples that have been driven hard or tuned; compression and leakdown testing before purchase is advisable. Rod bearing wear is a known downstream consequence of oil starvation events. JDM examples should be inspected for rust at fenders, quarter panels, strut towers, wheel arches, and the chassis underside, as rust protection at manufacture varied. A full list of modifications on any non-stock example is advisable before purchase, as poorly executed engine modifications compound the cost of the EJ engine's existing maintenance sensitivities. The Subaru Legacy and Subaru Forester share EJ-engine families and the Subaru AWD platform with the Impreza across overlapping production eras.
