About the Mazda RX-8
The Mazda RX-8 (SE3P) is a front-mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive four-door coupe produced from 2003 to 2012. Its defining structural feature is a set of rear-hinged suicide doors that open to a small rear seat, making it the only sports coupe of its era to combine rear-seat access with a conventional two-door profile from the outside. Mazda produced approximately 192,094 SE3P units across the full run. The model line splits into two series: the original 2003–2008 build and a mid-cycle refresh covering 2009–2012 that revised the exterior, suspension calibration, and oil metering pump mapping.
The SE3P carries the 13B-MSP Renesis, a 1.3-liter (654cc per rotor) naturally-aspirated twin-rotor Wankel with side-exhaust ports — a layout Mazda chose to meet 2003 emissions targets the prior turbocharged 13B-REW could not. The six-port configuration used in manual-transmission cars produces 231PS at approximately 8,500 rpm with a 9,000 rpm redline; the four-port configuration in automatic-transmission cars produces 192PS at a lower redline. JDM trim lines include the sport-oriented Type S (6-speed manual, 18-inch wheels) and the comfort-spec Type E (automatic), with Type RS and Type RZ adding Recaro seats and Bilstein dampers in Series 1. The 2009–2012 Series 2 refresh introduced the R3 (Recaro, Bilstein, 19-inch wheels, 6-speed manual) and closed production with the 1,000-unit Spirit R — available as Type A (6-speed manual, Brembo brakes), Type B (automatic), and Type C. A Mazdaspeed-tuned run of 480 JDM-only units was produced in 2003. Unlike the turbocharged RX-7, the Renesis delivers power near the top of the rev range with limited torque below 5,500 rpm, a characteristic buyers should confirm matches their driving style.
The RX-8 was sold new in the US market; USDM buyers do not need to invoke the 25-year FMVSS exemption to own one domestically. JDM-specification examples — including Type RS, Spirit R, and the Mazdaspeed run not offered in the US — become eligible for import under the 25-year rule from 2028 (2003 build year) through 2037 (2012). JDM RX-8s are right-hand drive. Pre-purchase inspection requires a rotary-specific differential-pressure or compression test performed with the engine hot; standard cylinder-bore gauges do not function correctly on Wankel engines. Mazda's documented reference is 7.5 bar per face with no more than 1.5 bar variance across all three faces of each rotor. Six apex seals in total — three per rotor — degrade from heat, insufficient lubrication, and ignition neglect; replacing ignition coils, spark plugs, and plug leads on schedule is the primary maintenance lever for seal longevity. Engine flooding, caused by shutting down a cold engine before it reaches operating temperature, is a documented failure mode that can damage the catalytic converter and leave the car in a no-start condition. Service records covering oil change intervals and ignition component replacement are a meaningful indicator of engine health on any prospective purchase.
