About the Honda S2000
The Honda S2000 is a two-seat, rear-wheel-drive roadster produced from 1999 to 2009 across two chassis designations: AP1 (1999–2003) and AP2 (2004–2009). Honda sold the S2000 new in the United States, Japan, Canada, and Europe, making it one of the few models on this marketplace with a large domestic US supply alongside imported JDM examples. Approximately 110,000 units were produced globally across the full run. The AP1 used the F20C (JDM) or F20C1 (North America) 2.0L four-cylinder; the AP2 received the 2.2L F22C1 in North America and Japan from 2004 and 2006 respectively, while European models retained the F20C through 2009. The S2000 was positioned as a driver-focused roadster at a base price of approximately $28,000 USD when new.
The AP1 F20C (JDM) produces 250PS at 8,300 rpm with an 11.7:1 compression ratio and a 9,000 rpm redline; the North American F20C1 produces 240hp at 8,300 rpm at 11.0:1 compression. Specific output at launch was approximately 120 hp per litre. The AP2 F22C1 (North America, 2004–2009) produces 237hp at 7,800 rpm with an 8,200 rpm redline and stronger torque of 162 lb-ft at 6,800 rpm; the JDM F22C rates at 242PS. A six-speed close-ratio manual was the only transmission offered across all markets and years; a helical LSD is standard on all variants. JDM-exclusive trims include the Type V (AP1 and AP2), which offered optional Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGS), and the Type S (AP2, 1,755 units, 2008–2009), which added revised aero, sport suspension, and chassis bracing for street use. The US-only Club Racer (AP2, 699 units, 2008–2009) is the factory track variant: lower-ratio steering rack, stiffer suspension, additional chassis bracing, roughly 90 lbs lighter than a standard AP2, no spare tire. The AP1 F20C is subject to oil consumption at sustained high rpm and carries a known intake valve retainer fatigue point from over-revving; the F22C1 received upgraded retainers from the factory and is not affected by either issue.
Because the S2000 was sold new in the United States, all USDM AP1 (2000–2003) and AP2 (2004–2009) cars are domestically titled and require no import process for US buyers. JDM-specification imports are right-hand drive and subject to the standard 25-year FMVSS exemption: AP1 JDM models from 1999 became US-eligible from 2024; the full AP1 JDM run clears by 2028; AP2 JDM models from 2004 become eligible from 2029 onward. Canadian buyers may import 15-year-old examples. For pre-purchase inspection, the highest-priority areas on any S2000 are: compression and leakdown test (engine wear is common on track-driven examples); accident damage evaluation (frame rail condition, A-pillar paint, panel alignment); soft top condition (rear window cracking, drain function, cabin water intrusion); and transmission synchro check on 2nd and 3rd gear at high-rpm shifts. AP1-specific: confirm oil consumption history and inspect for intake valve retainer replacement. Modified or track-driven examples warrant closer scrutiny; service records covering valve adjustment, differential and transmission fluid, and brake system are the most informative documentation to request.
