Quick answer

The Galant was a Mitsubishi sedan. This guide covers three Japanese generations: the sixth (from October 1987), whose VR-4 is the turbocharged four-wheel-drive rally car; the seventh (from May 1992), with new V6 engines; and the eighth (from August 1996), whose VR-4 has a 2.5-litre twin-turbo V6. Check engine and grade documents before the chassis code.

Background

Overview

The Galant was a Mitsubishi sedan line. The VR-4 used a 4G63 turbo four in the sixth generation, a 6A12 2.0-litre twin-turbo V6 in the seventh-generation E84A, and a 6A13 2.5-litre twin-turbo V6 in the eighth generation. Check the engine, transmission, grade and frame number against the car's documents.

Quick read

Key takeaways

  • Three generations are covered, on sale in Japan from October 1987 (sixth), May 1992 (seventh) and August 1996 (eighth).
  • e10, e80 and ea0 are this site's route labels, not Mitsubishi chassis codes; each generation page lists Mitsubishi's own codes.
  • The sixth-generation VR-4 used the 4G63 turbo four; the eighth-generation VR-4 used the 6A13 twin-turbo V6. They are different cars.
  • A VR-4 code alone does not prove the grade. Check the engine, equipment and frame number against the paperwork.
  • Mitsubishi's recalls 712 (seventh generation) and 784 (eighth-generation VR-4) are checked by frame number.
