Smart buyer checklist

Treat this as two groups. Required items protect you from payment loss and fraud — if a seller resists any of them, walk away. Ideal items help you assess the car's condition; when one is missing, factor it into your risk and your offer rather than treating it as automatic fraud.

Requiredfraud and payment-loss prevention

  • Confirm title status. Clean, salvage, rebuilt, or no title — and the title's jurisdiction — should be clear before you wire.
  • Confirm the car is importable to your location. That's your homework, not the seller's; if the import path is unclear, step back and verify before paying.
  • Read the bill of sale before you wire. "As-is" with no warranty is normal; anything that removes inspection or payment protections is a red flag.
  • Use a third-party escrow service; never wire to a personal account. For dealer sales, a wire to the business account named on the invoice is normal; for private-party sales, use escrow.

Idealvehicle-condition diligence; factor missing items into risk and price

  • Ask for the export certificate. If the car was exported from Japan recently, the deregistration document can help confirm provenance and timing. If unavailable: certificates for older imports are often filed away, so absence is a risk signal, not automatic fraud.
  • Ask for underbody, engine bay, and rear-quarter photos. Those areas reveal rust and repair work that hero shots can hide.If unavailable: the car may still be in transit or storage; review existing media and ask for fresh shots once it's accessible.
  • Consider a third-party pre-purchase inspection (PPI). A specialist inspection can catch issues that change the price. If unavailable: a PPI is often not feasible while the car is still overseas, so price the added uncertainty instead of treating it as proof of fraud.

first 1961 model, at a time when Japanese passenger cars mostly did without it struts at the front, semi-trailing arms at the rear. Subaru's Sambar was the first ordinary kei truck and cab-van offered with four-wheel drive, from 1980. Under it is the EN07, a 660cc 4-cylinder engine. The EN07 is a genuine four-cylinder in a kei-sized package. Subaru kept building it long after almost everyone else had settled on three cylinders, and it is the single biggest reason Sambars have their own following. Drive reaches the road through a manual gearbox, four-wheel drive. By 1999 the four-cylinder kei engine had become a rarity, and the EN07 was the one still in volume production. The odometer reads 83,413 mi and the listing records a condition of used. Interior colour is recorded as Grey. Fuel type on file is Gasoline. Four-wheel drive in a van body is an unusual combination outside Japan, and it is the reason these get used well past the end of the pavement. We describe what is recorded and nothing more. If a figure is not on this page, it is because we do not have it on file. The asking price is $4,977.

Asking-price context

JDMBUYSELL comparison data for this Subaru Sambar; the basis line states the exact pool used.

Figures are shown in your selected display currency, and fall back to USD when live rates are unavailable. Active asking-price pools use current active listings, not verified sale prices or an appraisal. For sold pools: sale price when reported; otherwise, the listing’s last asking price. Samples of fewer than 5 comparable listings are not shown. Lighter shading means fewer examples, not higher precision. Source: JDMBUYSELL listing data.
