Smart buyer checklist

Treat this as two groups. Required items protect you from payment loss and fraud — if a seller resists any of them, walk away. Ideal items help you assess the car's condition; when one is missing, factor it into your risk and your offer rather than treating it as automatic fraud.

Requiredfraud and payment-loss prevention

  • Confirm title status. Clean, salvage, rebuilt, or no title — and the title's jurisdiction — should be clear before you wire.
  • Confirm the car is importable to your location. That's your homework, not the seller's; if the import path is unclear, step back and verify before paying.
  • Read the bill of sale before you wire. "As-is" with no warranty is normal; anything that removes inspection or payment protections is a red flag.
  • Use a third-party escrow service; never wire to a personal account. For dealer sales, a wire to the business account named on the invoice is normal; for private-party sales, use escrow.

Idealvehicle-condition diligence; factor missing items into risk and price

  • Ask for the export certificate. If the car was exported from Japan recently, the deregistration document can help confirm provenance and timing. If unavailable: certificates for older imports are often filed away, so absence is a risk signal, not automatic fraud.
  • Ask for underbody, engine bay, and rear-quarter photos. Those areas reveal rust and repair work that hero shots can hide.If unavailable: the car may still be in transit or storage; review existing media and ask for fresh shots once it's accessible.
  • Consider a third-party pre-purchase inspection (PPI). A specialist inspection can catch issues that change the price. If unavailable: a PPI is often not feasible while the car is still overseas, so price the added uncertainty instead of treating it as proof of fraud.

rear-wheel drive. Subaru built the Sambar in-house from 1961 until the last one left the line on 29 February 2012, after which the badge moved onto a rebadged Daihatsu. A 1991 vehicle comes from the in-house era. Putting the engine under the bed was a deliberate load-carrying decision: on a kei truck the difference between empty and laden is enormous, and the engine acts as ballast over the driven axle when the bed is empty. The Sambar is the odd one out in the class and deliberately so: Subaru put the engine right at the back, behind the rear axle, and drove the rear wheels from there. The odometer reads 16,000 mi and the listing records a condition of used. Interior colour is recorded as Grey. Fuel type on file is Gasoline. A 660cc engine will not tow across a state, but it will do yard, field and site work all day on very little fuel. Japanese makers also held to a voluntary 64PS ceiling for the class. Built in 1991, this Sambar is 35 years old and clears the 25-year threshold at which imported vehicles are exempt from US federal motor vehicle safety standards conformity. Price on this one is $6,615.

Asking-price context

JDMBUYSELL comparison data for this Subaru Sambar; the basis line states the exact pool used.

Figures are shown in your selected display currency, and fall back to USD when live rates are unavailable. Active asking-price pools use current active listings, not verified sale prices or an appraisal. For sold pools: sale price when reported; otherwise, the listing’s last asking price. Samples of fewer than 5 comparable listings are not shown. Lighter shading means fewer examples, not higher precision. Source: JDMBUYSELL listing data.
