It gets up to highway merging speeds with ease and the extra grunt over the 1KZ in noticable. It also slows down impressively well for a large SUV. ABS brakes are standard and we replaced the front pads and rotors to keep stopping distances as short as possible. As a true off-roader the standard 4WD is supplemented by a center locking differential and a low range. Simple to operate, the transfer case is a stout unit and has been bolstered with a new front output seal. The suspension was also refreshed heavily. New rear upper and lower control arms were installed and we also slapped on two new rear shocks while we were back there. Over the pavement, this chassis features a smooth ride and is more refined than its 4Runner/Surf stablemate. We performed an extensive repair on the power steering system by rebuilding the rack with all new seals. New inner and outer tie rods were chucked on for good measure, and we replaced the boots and bushings. Lastly we wrapped the OEM alloys in brand new Falken all-terrain tires, and freshly aligned this rig. The new rubber not only looks mean, but quells road noise and will provide all the year round grip required for tens of thousands of miles to come.
