Description

This Prado shares parts with 3rd generation 4Runners here in the states, which makes interchangeability of suspension, brakes, and steering components seamless, yet it boasts a larger cabin, optional third row seating, and a flagship turbodiesel powerplant never offered in our US domestic market. For daily use and occasional weekend abuse, we find the 90 series Prado to be nearly the perfect SUV. ird row seating, and a flagship turbodiesel powerplant never offered in the states. It’s also a handsome rig, with period correct styling, and our 2000 Prado TZ looks great in a fresh coat of Earth Metallic (4Z1). Set off by OEM rainguards, refinished factory alloys, and a factory rear tire mount, the cosmetics on this cruiser are in good shape, save for a few minor paint imperfections. The 70k verified and documented miles on the clock are appealing too, and overall, this trusty Toyota feels barely broken in. This sleek tan troubador would excel at shuttling around passengers, daily driving on your commute, or trudging into the great outdoors for a weekend adventure. At this point it goes without saying, these Japanese Classic SUV’s are surprisingly well engineered for the modern age! Offering increased square footage and carrying capacity over the Hilux Surf, the Prado’s interior hits the mark in more ways than one. It’s spacious, like a full size Cruiser should be, and its packed with power amenities to make daily driving easy. The condition of the materials is above average, indicating this 90 series was well cared for in a prior life. The tan cloth upholstery is the star of the show, with retro-patterned inserts and seating arrangements for up to eight! The cloth shows no discernible rips, stains, or tears from daily use, which is truly impressive, and the dash cover is in equally good shape, save for some adhesive residue from a prior accessory mount. The center stack features an easy to use automatic climate control system, which has cold A/C and hot heat on the ready, and a modern Panasonic audio works like a charm. Bluetooth integration gets your tunes thumping, and if you choose to forgo your phone’s GPS, a factory field monitor can display your direction of travel and a few environmental data points too. A large power moonroof is also on hand to let in some natural ventilation and a view of the heavens above. Power windows, locks, and electronic folding side mirrors are in good working order, to make daily usage more enjoyable. The seating arrangements are versatile. The third row can fold up and stow against the D-pillars to expand the cargo hold, and the middle bench can flip fully forward to accommodate a trip to the flea market or hardware store. All in all, it’s hard to over-scrutinize this cabin, and we think the next owner will find it to be in above average condition. Under the hood is Toyota’s prized 1KD-FTV turbodiesel. We’ve wrenched on quite a few of these direct injected powerplants, and we think they earn high marks for efficiency, power, and overall ease of service. Taking care of a comprehensive check-in, our trained technicians have serviced this one for the road ahead, starting with a new 12v battery that was installed to properly test the alternator. After an oil and filter service, we took care of a new serpentine belt, and replaced the leaky old valve cover gasket with a brand new one. A new engine air filter and fuel filter maximize efficiency, and we’re quite impressed with the driving dynamics of these direct injected 3.0’s. Midrange power and torque are improved tenfold, and a stout automatic gearbox helps send power rearward, or to all four wheels if the transfer case is engaged. We also performed a fluid flush on the front differential and installed a new front axle seal to prolong the life of the drivetrain. For real off road expeditions, a center locking differential and low range are handy, too. Comfortable over bumps, divots, and larger imperfections, the factory suspension benefits from new rear shocks and passed state safety inspection with flying colors. The same goes for the power steering, which is light and easy to maneuver. The ABS brakes stop on a dime, and to make the most of the freshly installed Falken tires, a fresh four wheel alignment was performed to keep this Prado running tip top.
