Description

It might be a dark horse, and a bit surprising, but the 90 Series might be the best JDM SUV value on the market. It might be a dark horse, and a bit surprising, but the 90 Series might be the best JDM SUV value on the market. Built in the year 2000, this drives like a modern vehicle, and is built atop the same chassis as our domestic 4Runners and is even powered by the same 2.7L gasoline engine. Set off OEM rainguards, 16′′ OEM Tacoma alloys, a rare hardshell spare tire cover, privacy tint, OEM bug deflector, and chrome mirror caps and door handles, this Millennium Silver (K73) truck is as han

dsome as they come. Even better, this capable and reliable one-owner rig is fresh off a recent service and offered with only 67k verified and documented miles on the clock. Spacious, safe, and inexpensive to operate, this terrific Toyota is a certified Japanese Classic. The cabin is spacious, in good condition, and includes a bunch of premium materials. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and dual SRS airbags are standard equipment. Mounted atop the dash, an OEM field monitor displays information about the outside conditions and includes an integrated clinometer. The driver benefits from a full slate of electric options, and a manual tilt-adjustable steering column makes finding the ideal driving position easy enough. Power windows, power locks, and power folding mirrors all work in typical Toyota fashion, making daily use more enjoyable. Faux woodgrain trim breaks up the cabin and adds to the premium feel. The audio was upgraded in Japan to a touchscreen Pioneer headunit. With Bluetooth technology equipped, you can jam out and make your phone calls while keeping your eyes affixed on the road. There’s also a neat 10 disc changer primed and loaded with Japanese tunes. Below lies a dual-zone automatic climate control system. Ice cold AC and piping hot heat can be dispersed to the front and rear to find the ideal cabin temperature. If you prefer more natural ventilation, the rear side glass pops outward, and a large OEM moonroof can be tilted upward or fully retracted. The blue upholstery is clean and soft to the touch. Like the carpets and headliner, the seating material has withstood the past 25 years without sustaining major abuse. The matching door cards are in good nick, and the interior plastics are in above-average shape, and it’s clear this car was cared for in a prior life overseas. It even includes a spare key, the Japanese maintenance booklet, and the OEM carpet mats to protect against spills and stains. The body-on-frame platform is a tough one, and the same can be said for the 3RZ-FE engine. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 2.7L cranks to life quickly courtesy of a new 12V battery. To ensure all the lubricant stays internal to the four-banger, one of our trained techs has resealed the valve cover gasket and half moon seals. While we were in there, we also took care of a set of new spark plugs. Surprisingly, the 3RZ is almost as quick to accelerate as the optional V6, and this chain-driven powerplant is linked to a stout automatic gearbox. Perfect for year-round use, the Prado’s Full-Time 4WD system works like a champ, and for off-road escapades, a low range and center locker can be engaged. Highway cruising is effortless thanks to the long wheelbase, and this platform gobbles up large and small potholes with utmost confidence. New front sway bar links were added prior to its state inspection. The power steering is light and easy to articulate, and grip is handled by four new 31′′ Falken all-terrain tires. Freshly aligned, this Land Cruiser tracks straight as an arrow, and the new rubber looks mean and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
